This lecture will introduce the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition “Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer” that opens on December 13, 2021. The exhibition will showcase The Met’s outstanding collection of Korean lacquerware with nearly 30 examples from the twelfth century to the present, marking the Museum’s first exhibition dedicated solely to Korean lacquerware.

 

 

About the lecturer


Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun, Ph.D (Associate Curator for Korean Art at The Eleanor Hyun is the Associate Curator for Korean Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She previously served as curator for the Korean Collections at the British Museum from 2015 to 2019. She is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Chicago, writing a dissertation on late imperial Joseon Korean and Qing Chinese art. She received a BA in Art History and MA in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University. In 2013–14, she was a Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is the recipient of numerous other fellowships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art)
