Putting a Spotlight on Artists that Shined this Year

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting artists of Korean descent, will be holding its 2020 17th Annual Gala & Awards Ceremony online on December 12th at 7:00pm EST. The event will feature an awards ceremony to deliver a total of $70,000 in prize and grant money to 11 artists, researchers, and curators selected through a months-long open call process organized by the foundation, as well as a report on the AHL Foundation’s programs and progress in 2020.
Since its establishment in 2003, AHL Foundation has dedicated itself to widening the profile of Korean contemporary art through supporting aspiring artists and curators, and also holding exhibitions, education programs, workshops, and other events.
AHL Foundation founder and president Ms. Sook Nyu Lee Kim remarked that, “Today, with an unforeseen situation like the current coronavirus pandemic, I hope we can all come together and make the most of this online event,” adding her thanks to the foundation’s supporters and this year’s award recipients.
Meanwhile, Director of the Korean Cultural Center NY, Yoon-joong Cho, shared a congratulatory message to the foundation in the run-up to the Annual Gala. “I applaud the dedication and effort of Ms. Sook Nyu Lee Kim and all the staff at AHL Foundation,” he said. “Even in the midst of the current pandemic, the Korean Cultural Center NY plans to seek a suitable path forward and continue to work with cultural organizations in New York such as AHL Foundation.”
This year’s 17th Annual AHL Foundation Gala & Awards Ceremony is open to all and will feature supporters and prominent figures within the Korean American art community. 한인 미술인 지원단체 ‘알재단’ (대표 이숙녀) 은 오는 12월 12일(토) 오후 7시에 제 17회 알재단 수상식 및 연례 갈라 행사를 개최한다. 온라인으로 개최하는 이번 행사는 한 해 동안 알재단이 주최한 공모전에서 당선된 미술인과 아카이브 연구원, 큐레이터 등 11명에게 상장과 상금 총 7만여 달러를 전달하는 시상식을 갖고, 2020년 알재단의 프로그램과 진행 상황을 보고하는 자리이다. 또한 부대 행사로 알재단 현대미술 컬렉션의 작품 옥션을 마련했다. 또한 재단 설립 초창기인 제1회 알재단 기금 수상자이자 중견 작가인 황란씨와 뉴욕한국문화원 조윤증 원장의 축사, 2020년 그랜트와 어워드 수상자들의 생생한 수상 소감을 실시간으로 들을 수 있는 자리가 될 예정이다.
알재단은 미국 내 한인 예술가의 발전과 한국 현대 미술을 목적으로 2003년에 창립되었으며 작가와 큐레이터를 위한 후원 기금 뿐만 아니라 전시회, 교육 프로그램, 워크숍 등 다양한 프로그램으로 한국 현대 미술의 지지층을 넓혀가는 데 앞장서고 있다. 알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “코로나 바이러스 감염증으로 누구도 예상하지 못했던 상황을 맞이한 오늘, 온라인으로 진행하는 시상식이지만 모두 함께 참여하여 뜻깊은 시간을 만들 수 있기를 바란다.”며, 이번 행사에 대한 많은 관심과 후원을 바란다고 당부했다.
한편 2020년 알재단의 갈라 행사에 앞서 뉴욕한국문화원 조윤증 원장은 “이숙녀 회장님을 비롯한 알재단의 모든 스탭들의 헌신과 노력에 큰 박수를 보내고 코로나19 사태의 어려움 속에서도 뉴욕문화원은 알재단을 비롯한 뉴욕의 여러 문화예술기관과 협력하여 시대와 상황에 걸맞은 길을 능동적으로 모색해 나갈 계획”이라며 축하 인사말을 전했다.
