AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean and Korean American artists, has selected Sooa Lim as the recipient of the 2026 AHL–Kim Family Fund Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides a one-year research grant to support the continued development of the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA), one of AHL Foundation’s major initiatives launched in 2013.

As the 2026 Research Fellow, Lim will contribute to the ongoing research, organization, and digitization of archival materials within the AKAA. Working closely with the Foundation, she will assist in expanding the archive through artist research, archival documentation, collection management, and the addition of new artist records to the AKAA digital archive. Her work will help strengthen the archive as an accessible resource preserving the history and legacy of Korean and Korean American artists.

Sooa Lim is an archivist, curator, and cataloguer specializing in Korean and Korean American art history. She currently works as head auction cataloguer and curator, a role that brings together object research, artist documentation, provenance, and precise descriptive writing. She holds an MA in History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons School of Design and earned both an MA in Arts Management and a BA in Design from the Korea National University of Arts. Based between Seoul and the northeastern United States, including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Lim has worked with institutions such as the Seoul Children’s Museum, Weinberg Modern, and InsideInside. She is also the founder of NaUs Art Collective, a digital platform that highlights Asian diasporic archives and visual culture. Her ongoing collaboration with the SEORO Korean Cultural Network archive, an art collective in New York during the 1980s and 1990s, reflects her commitment to expanding the transnational visual foundations of Korean and Korean American art history through research and curatorial practice.

Established in 2020, the Research Fellowship was renamed the AHL–Kim Family Fund Research Fellowship in 2021 through the generous support of the Kim Family Fund, founded by renowned artists Tchah Sup Kim and Myong Hi Kim. Through this fellowship, AHL Foundation and the Kim Family Fund continue to support research, documentation, and the preservation of Korean American cultural heritage while advancing scholarship on Korean artists in the United States.

알재단, 2026 ‘김패밀리펀드’ 리서치 펠로우로 임수아 선정

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 임수아(Sooa Lim)를 2026년도 ‘알-김패밀리펀드(AHL–Kim Family Fund) 리서치 펠로우십’ 수상자로 선정했다. 이번 펠로우십은 알재단의 주요 사업인 **재미 한인 미술가 아카이브(Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA)**의 지속적인 연구와 구축을 지원하기 위해 마련된 1년 과정의 연구 펠로우십이다.

올해 리서치 펠로우로 선정된 임수아는 AKAA 아카이브의 자료 조사, 정리 및 디지털 아카이빙을 비롯해 작가 리서치, 아카이브 컬렉션 관리, 신규 작가 자료 구축 등의 업무를 수행할 예정이다. 이를 통해 한국 및 재미 한인 미술가들의 활동을 체계적으로 기록하고, 디지털 아카이브를 더욱 풍부한 연구 자원으로 발전시키는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

임수아는 한국 및 재미 한인 미술사를 중심으로 연구를 이어왔으며, 현재 옥션 헤드 카탈로거 겸 큐레이터로서, 작품 조사, 작가 이력 확인, 출처 및 소장 이력 검토, 카탈로그 검수 등을 담당하고 있다. 파슨스 디자인 스쿨에서 디자인사 및 전시 연구 석사 학위를 받았으며, 한국예술종합학교에서 예술경영 석사와 디자인 학사 학위를 취득했다. 서울과 미국 동북부, 특히 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 코네티컷을 기반으로 활동하며 서울상상나라, Weinberg Modern, InsideInside 등에서 전시, 리서치, 아카이브 관련 프로젝트를 수행해왔다. 또한 아시아 디아스포라의 아카이브와 시각 문화를 조명하는 디지털 플랫폼 NaUs Art Collective의 설립자로서, 최근에는 1980-90년대 뉴욕에서 활동한 한인 및 재미 한인 작가 그룹 서로(SEORO) 문화연구회의 아카이브 리서치를 이어가며 이주와 지역 공동체의 경험이 한국 및 재미 한인 미술사 안에서 어떻게 기록되고 해석될 수 있는지 탐구하고 있다.

한편, 김패밀리펀드 리서치 펠로우십은 2020년 한인 작가들의 후원으로 시작되었으며, 2021년부터는 중견 작가 김차섭(Tchah Sup Kim)·김명희(Myong Hi Kim) 부부가 설립한 김패밀리펀드의 지원으로 운영되고 있다. 알재단과 김패밀리펀드는 이번 펠로우십을 통해 재미 한인 문화유산의 보존과 한국 및 재미 한인 미술사 연구의 발전을 지속적으로 지원하고 있다.
