Sooa Lim Selected as the 2025 AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellow
– Supporting AKAA archive development and research on the Korean American art community

 

AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Korean and Korean American artists, has selected Sooa Lim as the recipient of the 2025 AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship. Since 2015, the Grace Charity Foundation has annually supported this fellowship, which provides a grant to enable in-depth research as part of the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) project.

Award Statement from Sooa Lim

“I am truly honored to receive the 2025 AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship. With this opportunity, I can continue my archival research on community-based practices and intergenerational narratives that have long been marginalized in mainstream art discourse. My current work centers on the SEORO Korean Cultural Network, a collective active in the late 20th century whose exhibitions, public programs, and self-organized archives fostered diasporic solidarity among Korean and Korean American artists. I am deeply grateful to the AHL Foundation for recognizing the importance of bringing these stories to light and for supporting the act of remembering as a form of resistance. This award not only promotes scholarly inquiry but also emphasizes the importance of listening deeply to voices that have often been overlooked, to visual languages that communicate across silence, and to the living traces of those who created space for future generations. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to carry these histories forward, and I accept it with profound gratitude and a heart committed to care.”

About Sooa Lim
Sooa Lim is an archivist, curator, and cataloguer specializing in Korean and Korean American art history. She holds an MA in History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons School of Design and earned both an MA in Arts Management and a BA in Design from the Korea National University of Arts. Based between Seoul and the northeastern United States, including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Lim has worked with institutions such as the Seoul Children’s Museum, Weinberg Modern, and InsideInside. She is also the founder of NaUs Art Collective, a digital platform that highlights Asian diasporic archives and visual culture. Her ongoing collaboration with the SEORO Korean Cultural Network archive, an art collective in New York during the 1980s and 1990s, reflects her commitment to expanding the transnational visual foundations of Korean and Korean American art history through research and curatorial practice.

Launched in 2013, AKAA is one of AHL Foundation’s major initiatives to document and preserve materials on Korean American artists. The archive serves as a platform for preserving Korean cultural heritage and fostering scholarly exchange among art historians. It is accessible to the public via its online platform (https://www.ahlfoundation-akaa.org/), with the aim of expanding visibility of Korean artists’ works. Beginning this fall, Lim will join the AKAA project team, conducting artist interviews, collecting archival materials, and curating related public programs.

The fellowship is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Grace Charity Foundation, founded by Jin-soo Kim, CEO of Image Solutions, a global life sciences company, and his wife, Eun-sil Kim, a board member of AHL Foundation. The foundation supports educational and Christian missionary activities, and through this partnership with AHL Foundation, continues to promote the growth of the visual arts within the Korean American community.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 임수아(Sooa Lim) 씨를 2025년도 ‘알-그레이스 채러티 재단 리서치 펠로우십(AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship)’ 수상자로 선정했다. 2015년부터 알재단과 그레이스 채러티 재단(Grace Charity Foundation)은 매년 연구기금을 지원하며, 선정된 이는 재미 한인 미술가 아카이브 (Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA) 프로젝트의 디지털 아카이브 데이터 베이스 구축 및 한인 작가 연구를 진행하게 된다.

수상 소감 (임수아)

“2025년도 알-그레이스 채러티 재단 리서치 펠로우십에 선정되어 큰 영광입니다. 이번 기회를 통해 그동안 주류 미술 담론에서 소외되어 온 공동체 기반의 실천과 세대 간 서사에 대한 아카이브 연구를 이어갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 현재 제 연구는 20세기 후반 뉴욕에서 활동하며 전시, 공공 프로그램, 자발적 아카이브를 통해 한인 및 한인 미국인 예술가들의 디아스포라적 연대를 형성했던 서로(SEORO) 한인문화네트워크에 집중하고 있습니다. 이러한 이야기를 세상에 드러내고, 기억하는 행위를 저항의 방식으로 지지해 주신 알재단에 깊이 감사드립니다. 이번 수상은 학문적 탐구뿐 아니라 종종 간과된 목소리, 침묵을 넘어서는 시각 언어, 미래 세대를 위한 공간을 만들어온 이들의 살아있는 흔적을 경청하는 일의 중요성을 일깨워줍니다. 이러한 역사를 이어가는 일은 제게 큰 특권이자 책임이며, 감사와 돌봄의 마음으로 이 과제를 맡겠습니다.”

임수아 소개
임수아 씨는 한국 및 재미 한인 미술사를 전문으로 하는 아카이비스트이자 큐레이터, 카탈로거이다. 파슨스 디자인 스쿨에서 디자인사 및 큐레토리얼 스터디 석사 학위를, 한국예술종합학교에서 예술경영 석사 및 디자인 학사 학위를 취득했다. 현재 서울과 미국 동북부(뉴욕, 뉴저지, 코네티컷)를 기반으로 활동하며, 서울시립어린이박물관, Weinberg Modern, InsideInside 등 기관에서 경력을 쌓았다. 또한 아시아 디아스포라 아카이브와 시각 문화를 조명하는 디지털 플랫폼 NaUs Art Collective의 설립자이기도 하다. 뉴욕에서 1980–90년대 활동한 서로(SEORO) 한인문화네트워크 아카이브와의 협업을 통해, 연구와 큐레이션 실천을 기반으로 한국 및 재미 한인 미술사의 초국적 시각적 토대를 확장하는 데 전념하고 있다.

AKAA (Archive of Korean Artists in America)는 2013년 시작된 알재단의 주요 사업 중 하나로, 재미 한인 미술가들에 관한 자료를 기록·보존하기 위해 운영되고 있다. AKAA는 한인 문화유산 보존과 미술사 연구자 간 학문적 교류를 위한 플랫폼으로 기능하며, 온라인 아카이브(https://www.ahlfoundation-akaa.org/)를 통해 대중들에게 공개되어 있다. 임수아 씨는 올가을부터 아카이브 프로젝트팀에 합류하여 AKAA 의 실물 자료, 라이브러리 및 데이터 구축 관리와 한인 미술 커뮤니티 심층 연구를 진행하게 된다.

본 리서치 펠로우십은 이미지 솔루션(Image Solutions)의 CEO 김진수 씨와 알재단 이사인 부인 김은실 씨가 교육 및 기독교 선교 활동을 지원하기 위해 설립한 그레이스 채러티 재단의 후원으로 가능해졌다. 알재단과 그레이스 채러티 재단은 한인 커뮤니티와 미주 한인 미술계 발전을 위해 지속적으로 협력해오고 있다.
