Sam Blumenfeld Selected as the 2025 AHL–Kim Family Fund Research Fellow
– Conducting in-depth oral interviews and archival research for the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) –

 

AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean and Korean American artists, has selected Sam Blumenfeld as the recipient of the 2025 AHL–Kim Family Fund Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides a grant to support research contributing to the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA), one of AHL Foundation’s major initiatives launched in 2013.

As the 2025 Research Fellow, Blumenfeld will conduct in-depth oral interviews with Korean artists and collect archival materials to expand the AKAA collection. Their work will help preserve valuable histories and foster greater accessibility to Korean American art through the Foundation’s digital archive (https://www.ahlfoundation-akaa.org/).

“Due to my unique positionality as an ex-migrant having returned back from South Korea, I have made it my work to continue to build bridges between Seoul and New York to platform underrepresented artists and practitioners. The AHL–Kim Family Fund Research Fellowship gives me the essential support I need to continue this work and continue to support the Korean community both in New York and overseas. I am so grateful for the opportunity to deepen my connections to the Korean and Korean-American community in New York, a place I most recently call home, and to continue my research while working with artists and curators I’ve come to consider family, and for the opportunity to expand this by meeting new artists, curators, and researchers involved with AHL Foundation.”

About Sam Blumenfeld
Sam Blumenfeld is a curator and researcher exploring post-race and post-gender practices through new media, performance, and trans-linguistic visual languages on the web, particularly from the perspective of Korean artists reconciling with the legacy of Orientalism while living and working in the West as they create new modes and methods of identity-building. This research is situated around artist Nam Jun Paik’s relationship to the West and his strategies for navigating Orientalism while also priming Korea for a globalist perspective towards art; something that continues to be problematized in the political relationship between Korea and the West, particularly the US and Europe. Blumenfeld originally studied at the Rhode Island School of Design before finishing their degree at Columbia University. They have lived and worked in Seoul previously for ten years, where they previously co-ran a community printmaking studio, exhibited under Graphite on Pink, and worked on independent research and curatorial projects. She currently lives and works in New York while continuing to pursue curatorial projects both domestically and in Seoul.

The Kim Family Fund Research Fellowship was established in 2020 with the support of Korean American artists and has been funded since 2021 by the Kim Family Fund, founded by renowned artists Tchah Sup Kim and Myong Hi Kim. Through this fellowship, the AHL Foundation and the Kim Family Fund continue to support the preservation of Korean American cultural heritage and promote the advancement of Korean artists in the U.S.

알재단, 2025 ‘김패밀리펀드’ 리서치 펠로우로 샘 블루멘펠드 선정
– 재미 한인 미술 아카이브(AKAA) 심층 인터뷰 및 자료 수집 연구 진행 –

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 샘 블루멘펠드(Sam Blumenfeld)를 2025년도 ‘알-김패밀리펀드(AHL–Kim Family Fund) 리서치 펠로우십’ 수상자로 선정했다. 이번 펠로우십에 수상된 자는 연구기금을 지원 받아 알재단의 주요 사업인 재미 한인 미술가 아카이브(Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA)에 기여하게 된다.

올해 리서치 펠로우로 선정된 블루멘펠드는 한인 작가들을 대상으로 한 심층 구술 인터뷰와 아카이브 자료 수집을 통해 AKAA 컬렉션 확장에 나설 예정이다. 이 연구는 한인 미술사의 기록을 보존하고, 디지털 아카이브(https://www.ahlfoundation-akaa.org/)를 통해 대중이 보다 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

수상 소감 (샘 블루멘펠드)

“저는 한국에서 돌아온 전(前) 이주민으로서, 서울과 뉴욕을 잇는 다리를 놓고 소외된 예술가와 실천가들을 지원하는 일을 제 사명으로 삼아왔습니다. 이번 알-김패밀리펀드 리서치 펠로우십은 이 작업을 지속하고, 뉴욕과 해외의 한인 커뮤니티를 지원하는 데 꼭 필요한 기회를 제공합니다. 제가 최근 ‘집’이라 여기고 있는 뉴욕이라는 도시에서 한국 및 재미 한인 커뮤니티와의 연결을 할 수 있는 기회에 감사드리며, 제가 가족처럼 생각하는 작가와 큐레이터들과 연구를 이어갈 수 있어 기쁩니다. 새로운 예술가·큐레이터·연구자들을 알재단을 통해 만나게 될 것을 기대합니다.”

샘 블루멘펠드 소개
샘 블루멘펠드는 뉴미디어, 퍼포먼스, 웹상의 다언어적 시각 언어를 바탕으로 포스트-레이스(post-race)와 포스트-젠더(post-gender)적 실천을 탐구하는 큐레이터이자 연구자이다. 특히 한국 작가들이 서구에서 활동하며 오리엔탈리즘의 유산과 어떻게 마주하고, 이를 극복하며 새로운 정체성 구축의 방식을 만들어가는지를 연구한다. 서구와의 관계 속에서 백남준(Nam June Paik)의 전략과 한국 미술의 글로벌 담론 형성을 함께 조명하고자 한다.

블루멘펠드는 로드아일랜드 디자인 스쿨에서 학업을 시작해 컬럼비아 대학교에서 학위를 마쳤다. 10여 년간 서울에 거주하며 공동 판화 스튜디오를 운영하고, Graphite on Pink에서 전시에 참여했으며, 독립 연구 및 큐레이션 프로젝트를 진행했다. 현재는 뉴욕에 거주하며 국내외에서 활발히 기획 활동을 이어가고 있다.

한편, 김패밀리펀드 리서치 펠로우십은 2020년 한인 작가들의 후원으로 시작되어, 2021년부터는 중견 작가 김차섭(Tchah Sup Kim)·김명희(Myong Hi Kim) 부부가 설립한 김패밀리펀드의 지원으로 운영되고 있다. 알재단과 김패밀리펀드는 이번 펠로우십을 통해 재미 한인 문화유산 보존과 미주 한인 미술계의 발전을 지속적으로 지원하고 있다.
