The AHL Foundation is pleased to announce Morning Melody the solo exhibition of Suzy Taekyung Kim, on view at the Manhattan branch of the Bank of Hope. This exhibition will feature eight artworks selected from Kim’s most recent project ‘Morning Melody’ series and curated by AHL Foundation’s 2018 Curatorial fellow Hye Seong Margaret Tae.

In this commissioned exhibition, Tae curated to present one large-scale mixed media painting, ‘Spring Stroll’ as Kim’s representative artwork of this show and featured together with seven small paintings.  Reaching to 188 inches width and 38 inches high, ‘Spring Stroll’ is a large quadriptych with four large wood panels joined together and painted with acrylic, mica, genuine gold and colored silver flakes.  The soft pastel tones on its background gradually flow from the blue range to the green, and to the yellow to depict the transition of seasons.  The composition of fluffy petals and buds of magnolias are abstractly drawn and painted with horizontal streams of a range of background colors.  Together with the glittering fine lines drawn with genuine gold and colored silver flakes, the fine details of this artwork should be closely observed.  The perpendicularly dripping water on the surface reflects the artist’s soothed emotional states that comforted her while contemplating water streaming in nature.  The glittering fine lines drawn in between the buds and petals in the spring scene of nature would deliver the vibrancy and energy of spring and summer to the audiences.

Suzy Taekyung Kim is a New York based artist who was born in Daegu, South Korea.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia both in Vancouver, Canada.  She graduated from New York University (NYU) with a Master of Arts in Art Education.  She is the recipient of several national and international awards including the Scholarship for North American Scholars where she developed an art education system for immigrants.  Her works can be found in a select number of private and corporate collections in Canada, Great Britain, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and USA.  In 2016, she completed a permanent public art commission, “Frolic in the Clouds of Encore,” for a local gifted and talented school in the Cambria Heights neighborhood in Queens, New York.  She was awarded this art commission from the New York City (NYC) Department of Cultural Affairs, Percent for Art Program in collaboration with the NYC School Construction Authority.   Kim’s installation has been inspiring local communities by creating dreaming spaces that provide an uplifting visual interaction.  In 2017, she successfully realized, “The Waltz,” a public art commission for the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Nebraska.  Placed in the grand lobby, this work is the entry point for patients by warmly welcoming all and has activated the hospital setting with positivity, energy and vibrancy.

The show is part of AHL Foundation’s Art in the Workplace program, which aims to present contemporary art works outside of a gallery setting in a public space for the purpose of bringing art into everyday life and increasing its exposure to the public.  Morning Melody will be open to the public on Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm at the Bank of Hope, 16 West 32nd Street until May 15, 2019. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 12th, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
