The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean artists, has announced the selection of Jungmin Cho as the recipient of this year’s AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Open Call grant.
Founded in 2007 by businessman Chun Myung-guk, the Chun Family Foundation has awarded scholarships to over ten Korean students annually. Chairman Chun Myung-guk is actively engaged in philanthropic work throughout the Korean community, as well as in scholarship projects to support students. Since 2017, the AHL Foundation has selected curatorial fellows with the support of the Chun Family Foundation, providing grants and nurturing Korean exhibition planners. In 2024, the AHL Foundation and the Chun Family Foundation launched the Curatorial Open Call grant through a direct sponsorship agreement.
Curators selected for the Curatorial Open Call grant will receive a $5,000 award to curate an exhibition at the AHL Foundation Gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030), providing them with the opportunity to promote diverse artists within the New York art scene.
Jungmin Cho, the recipient of the 2025 AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial Open Call, is an independent curator and writer based in Seoul and New York, as well as the founder and director of WHITE NOISE—an art space and platform in Seoul dedicated to fostering artistic experimentation and building global art communities while exploring the structures of knowledge and value production since 2018. She tries to pose accessible yet critical questions to the world through art. Her current interest explores Korean modernity and its ongoing transformation of emotional and material residues, focusing on how these elements are symbolized and commodified in art and pop culture from a microscopic lens.
Through WHITE NOISE and her independent practice, Cho has collaborated with a wide range of international organizations, including Brief Histories, Canal Projects, Frieze Seoul, GYOPO, the Hessel Museum, Montez Press Radio, NOISE Istanbul, Space NN in Munich, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid, among others. Their work has been featured in publications such as The Art Newspaper, Artsy, Hyundai Art Lab, The New York Times, and Spike Art Magazine. Recently, Cho served as a guest curator for Untitled Miami 2024, exploring the theme “East Meets West,” and was a part of invited participants in 2025 ICI Curatorial Forum. She holds an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀) 올해의 ‘알-전 패밀리 재단 큐레토리얼 오픈콜(AHL-Chun Family Foundation Curatorial OpenCall)’ 수상자로 조정민(Jungmin Cho)씨를 선정했다.
2007년 사업가 전명국씨가 설립한 전패밀리 재단은 매해 10여 명의 한인 학생에게 장학금을 수여해 왔다. 정명국 회장은 학생들을 후원하기 위한 장학 사업뿐만 아니라 한인 사회 전반에 걸쳐 활발한 후원 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 알재단은 2017년부터 전 패밀리 장학회의 후원을 통해 큐레이토리얼 펠로우를 선정하여 기금을 지급하고 한인 전시 기획자 양성에 힘써 왔다. 2024년 알재단과 전패밀리장학회는 협약을 통해 직접 후원의 방식으로 ‘큐레이토리얼 오픈콜’ 그랜트를 런칭하는데 이르렀다.
큐레토리얼 오픈콜 그랜트에 선정된 큐레이터는 $5,000의 후원 기금으로 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030)에서 전시를 기획하는 기회를 얻는다.
2025 알-전 패밀리 재단 큐레토리얼 오픈콜 수상자인 조정민 씨는 서울과 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 독립 큐레이터이자 2018년 설립된 아트스페이스 화이트노이즈(WHITE NOISE)의 디렉터이다. 그를 비롯한 화이트노이즈는 예술기관과 지식 및 가치 생산의 구조를 실험하며 글로벌 아트 커뮤니티를 구축하고자 하며, 예술을 통해 세상에 대한 접근 가능한 비판적 질문을 던지고자 노력해 왔다. 그의 최근 관심사는 아시아의 근대성과 그로부터 파생된 감정적·물질적 잔여물이 어떻게 예술과 대중문화 속에서 상징화되고 상품화되는지를 미시적인 시각에서 탐구하는 것이다.
조정민은 화이트노이즈 내외부를 통해 브리프 히스토리즈(Brief Histories), 카날 프로젝트(Canal Projects), 프리즈 서울(Frieze Seoul), 교포(GYOPO), 헤셀 뮤지엄(Hessel Museum of Art), 몬테즈 프레스 라디오(Montez Press Radio), 노이즈 이스탄불(NOISE Istanbul), Space NN, 타이거 스트라이크 아스테로이드(Tiger Strikes Asteroid) 등 다양한 국제기관들과 협업해 왔다. 그의 활동은 The Art Newspaper, Artsy, 현대 아트랩, 뉴욕 타임즈, Spike Art Magazine 등의 매체에 소개되었으며, 최근 2024년 언타이틀드 마이애미(Untitled Miami)의 게스트 큐레이터로 참여했다. 조정민은 바드 칼리지 센터 포 큐레토리얼 스터디(Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College)에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다.
