New York — AHL Foundation Gallery is pleased to announce Echoes of Han: Fragments of Self, Memory, Identity, and Transformation, the 1st AHL Foundation Alumni Group Exhibition, featuring twelve artists of Korean heritage: Seongmin Ahn, Heejung Cho, Sung Ho Choi, Tai Hwa Goh, Hong Seon Jang, DeepPond Kim, Suzy Taekyung Kim, Judy Junghee Koo, Kakyoung Lee, Eunsook Lee, Jiyoun Lee-Lodge, and Jayoung Yoon. Curated by DeepPond Kim, the exhibition will be on view at AHL Foundation Gallery(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd. #C1, New York, NY 10030) from June 7 through July 3, 2025.

Rooted in the Korean concept of Han, a profound emotion intertwining sorrow, longing, endurance, and hope, Echoes of Han brings together artists who explore the intertwined

themes of identity, memory, cultural heritage, and personal transformation. Through diverse materials and methods, including clay, paper, wood, hair, and both digital and traditional practices, these artists give form to the nuanced layers of transformative experience, crafting works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.

It is said that Han emerges from historical trauma, collective memory, and personal hardship; it’s both individual and shared. Echoes of Han carves out a space where vulnerability and strength meet, and tradition collides with reinvention. In both abstract and representational works, the human body becomes a persistent thread, fragmented, reshaped, and reimagined. Through their practices, the artists weave together personal memories and collective histories, turning the creative process into an act of healing and quiet reflection, inviting viewers to witness a collective meditation on transformation.

This exhibition marks the inaugural AHL-Founder S.N. Kim Grant Exhibition, established by AHL Foundation President and Founder Sook Nyu Lee Kim in 2024. The series began with a solo exhibition by Ran Hwang, the first recipient of AHL’s Contemporary Visual Art Award in 2004 and Echoes of Han is the first group exhibition to be organized and presented by AHL Foundation alumni artists.

President Sook Nyu Lee Kim shared, “AHL Foundation has always valued community. I’m proud and deeply moved to see our alumni artists who have grown alongside AHL for over two decades come together for such a meaningful exhibition. As long as I’m able, I will continue supporting open calls and opportunities for our alumni, and I look forward to their ongoing engagement and participation.”

한(恨)의 메아리: 자아, 기억, 정체성, 그리고 변형의 파편들

뉴욕 — 알재단(AHL Foundation, 회장 이숙녀)은 첫 번째 알재단 동문 그룹전 「Echoes of Han: Fragments of Self, Memory, Identity, and Transformation | 한(恨)의 메아리: 자아, 기억, 정체성, 그리고 변형의 파편들」을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 총 12인의 한인 작가 고태화, 구정희, 김다연, 김태경, 안성민, 윤자영, 이가경, 이은숙, 이지연–로지, 장홍선, 조희정, 최성호가 참여 하며 모두 알재단의 현대미술상(AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards), 장학금, 펠로우십 등을 수상한 알재단 동문(Alumni Artists)이다.   전시는 김다연(DeepPond Kim)의 기획으로, 2025년 6월 7일부터 7월 3일까지 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd. #C1, New York, NY 10030)에서 열릴 예정이다.

‘한(恨)’은 슬픔, 그리움, 인내, 그리고 희망이 얽혀 있는 깊은 정서로, 한국 고유의 감정 개념이다. 이번 전시는 정체성, 기억, 문화유산, 그리고 개인의 내적 변형이라는 주제를 탐구하는 예술가들을 한자리에 모았다. 점토, 종이, 나무, 머리카락, 디지털 및 전통적 기법 등 다양한 재료와 방법을 통해, 복잡하고 다층적인 변형의 경험을 시각화하며, 개인적인 동시에 보편적으로 공감할 수 있는 작품들을 선보인다.

‘한’은 역사적 트라우마와 집단 기억, 그리고 개인의 고난에서 비롯된 감정으로, 개인적이면서도 공동체적인 성격을 지닌다. 이번 전시는 연약함과 강인함이 어우러진 공간을 마련하며, 전통과 재창조가 교차하는 경계를 탐색하고 새로운 가능성을 모색한다. 작품 속에서 인체는 분열하고, 재구성되며, 새롭게 상상되는 핵심적인 요소로 반복하여 등장한다. 예술가들은 자신의 기억과 공동의 역사를 엮어내며, 창작 과정을 치유와 성찰의 과정으로 승화시키고, 관객을 변화에 대한 집단적 사색의 장으로 초대한다.

본 전시는 알재단의 이숙녀 회장의 후원으로 2024년 제1회 알재단 설립자 이숙녀 회장 그랜트(AHL-Founder S.N.Kim Grant Exhibition)로 제1회 수상 작가인 황란 작가(2004년 현대미술상 수상) 초대전을 시작으로 알재단 동문이 함께 모여 준비한 최초의 그룹전으로 눈길을 끈다. 

알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “알재단은 항상 함께 하는 가치를 중시한다. 알재단의 20여 년 역사를 함께 한 자랑스러운 동문 작가들이 모여 전시를 열게 되어 매우 기쁘다. 앞으로도 힘이 되는 데까지 동문 작가를 위한 전시 오픈콜을 지속적으로 후원할 예정이므로 많은 동문 작가의 참여와 관심을 부탁드린다.”라며 전시 후원 및 개최 소감을 밝혔다.
