AHL Foundation Supports Michael Joo’s Participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia — In Minor Keys

Michael Joo, the internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, has been invited to participate in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh. The AHL Foundation, through the Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Foundation, proudly supports his participation, reinforcing its commitment to promoting Korean-American contemporary artists on the global stage.

The 61st Venice Biennale, taking place from May 9 to November 22, 2026, brings together 111 artists from around the world to explore complex narratives of memory, history, and cultural identity. Under Koyo Kouoh’s curatorial vision, In Minor Keys examines how personal and collective histories intersect and highlights voices and perspectives that challenge dominant narratives in contemporary art. Participating artists work across media including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance.

The invited artists were selected to reflect connections, resonances, and convergences in their practices, emphasizing relationships and dialogues across distances. In this spirit, In Minor Keys expands upon Koyo’s long-standing engagement with artists worldwide.

Michael Joo will be among the artists featured in the central exhibition, contributing his work to the global dialogue of contemporary art.

 

About Micheal Joo:
Michael Joo is a Korean-American contemporary artist known for his multidisciplinary practice, which includes sculpture, installation, video, and mixed media. His work often explores themes of biology, identity, and the intersection between science and culture. Joo has exhibited internationally in venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and numerous biennales and international exhibitions. His approach combines conceptual rigor with a keen sensitivity to materials, making him one of the most innovative voices in contemporary art today.

2026년 5월 9일부터 11월 22일까지 전시 진행

국제적으로 활발히 활동하고 있는 현대미술가 마이클 주(Michael Joo)가 제61회 베니스국제미술전 본전시 In Minor Keys에 초청되었다. 본 전시는 큐레이터 코요 쿠오(Koyo Kouoh)가 기획하였다. 비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Foundation을 통해 마이클 주의 이번 비엔날레 본전시 참여를 후원하며, 미국에 있는 한인 현대미술가들을 지원하는 재단의 노력을 이어가고 있다.

이번 제61회 베니스비엔날레는 2026년 5월 9일부터 11월 22일까지 열리며, 전 세계 111명의 작가들이 참여하여 기억, 역사, 문화적 정체성 등 복합적인 주제를 탐구하는 장이 될 것이다. 코요 쿠오의 지휘 아래 이번 본전시 In Minor Keys는 개인적·집단적 기억과 역사가 어떻게 교차하는지를 조명하며, 현대미술의 지배적 서사에 도전하는 다양한 목소리와 관점을 소개할 예정이다. 참여 작가들은 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 통해 관객에게 깊이 있는 몰입 경험을 제공할 것이다.

초청된 작가들은 서로의 작업에서 나타나는 연결성과 공명, 그리고 교차하는 지점을 중심으로 선정되었으며, 이를 통해 서로 떨어져 있는 지역 간에도 관계와 대화를 강화할 예정이다. 이러한 맥락 속에서, In Minor Keys는 쿠오가 전 세계 작가들과 오랜 기간 쌓아온 지속적인 교류를 확장하는 전시가 될 것이다.

마이클 주는 본전시의 참여 작가 중 한 명으로서, 이번 전시를 통해 현대미술의 글로벌한 담론에 기여할 것이다.

 

작가 소개

마이클 주는 조각, 설치, 영상, 혼합매체 등 다방면에서 활동하는 현대미술 작가이며, 주로 생물학, 정체성, 과학과 문화의 교차점이라는 주제를 탐구한다. 마이클 주는 휘트니 미술관(Whitney Museum of American Art), 뉴욕 현대미술관(Museum of Modern Art) 등 국제 유수의 전시 기관과 다수의 비엔날레에서 작품을 선보인 바 있다. 그는 개념적 탐구와 섬세한 재료 감각을 결합해, 현대미술계에서 혁신적인 작가로 평가받고 있다.
