New York, NY – The AHL Foundation is proud to announce Minji Chun as the 2026 recipient of the AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund. Established in 2022 with the generosity and support of renowned Korean artist Ran Hwang, the annual one-year fund supports the operation and development of the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) and provides an opportunity for the selected recipient to contribute to the strategic development of the Archive in a leadership position.

As the 2026 recipient, Chun will work to advance AKAA’s goals of collecting and preserving crucial archival materials related to artists of Korean heritage working in the United States. As part of the fund, she will develop and implement interview strategies for the AKAA, conducting at least five interviews with mid-career and senior Korean artists in the United States. These will include three artists who are not yet represented on the AKAA website and two artists already included in the online archive who have not yet participated in an interview. Through this work, Chun will contribute to expanding the Archive’s oral histories and strengthening its resources for future research and scholarship.

The AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund was launched in September 2022 in collaboration with artist Ran Hwang. The fund was established to bring specialized expertise to the AKAA and further its mission of documenting, collecting, and preserving the histories and practices of Korean and Korean American artists in the United States. Ran Hwang, the first recipient of the AHL Foundation’s Visual Art Award in 2004, has played an important role in supporting the development of this initiative.

Dr. Minji Chun is an art historian and critic. Chun is a Postdoctoral Associate Member in History of Art at the University of Oxford, where she recently completed her DPhil (2026). Her research focuses on modern and contemporary East Asian art, with a particular interest in socially engaged art and its broader social and historical contexts. A recipient of awards from ArtAsiaPacific, Gravity Effect, Art & Market, and Architectural Critics Journal, she has published in Art Journal, Burlington Contemporary, FIELD: A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism, Hyundai Artlab, and Wolganmisool, among others. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and the Korea Arts Management Service, alongside independent curatorial projects.

알재단, 2026년도 AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang 기금 수상자로 전민지 선정

비영리 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 2026년도 ‘AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund(알-AKAA 황란 펀드)’ 수상자로 전민지(Minji Chun)를 선정했다고 발표했다.

알-AKAA 황란 펀드는 한국계 작가 황란의 후원으로 2022년 설립된 연간 기금으로, 재미한인미술인 아카이브(Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA)의 운영과 발전을 지원하고, 선정된 수상자가 리더십 역할을 통해 AKAA의 발전 전략을 수립하고 추진할 수 있도록 지원한다.

2026년도 수상자로 선정된 전민지는 미국에서 활동하는 한국계 작가들의 주요 자료를 수집하고 보존하는 AKAA의 목표를 발전시키기 위한 활동을 진행할 예정이다. 특히 펀드의 주요 과제로, 미국에서 활동하는 중견 및 원로 한국계 작가들을 대상으로 최소 5회의 인터뷰를 진행한다. 이 가운데 3명은 아직 AKAA 웹사이트에 등재되지 않은 작가이며, 2명은 온라인 아카이브에 이미 등재되어 있으나 아직 인터뷰에 참여하지 않은 작가들이다. 이를 통해 AKAA의 구술 기록을 확장하고 향후 연구와 학술 활동을 위한 아카이브의 자료를 강화할 예정이다.

AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund는 황란작가와의 협력을 통해 2022년 9월 시작되었다. 이 기금은 한국계 작가들이 미국에서 활동하며 만들어 온 중요한 자료와 예술적 실천을 수집하고 보존하는 AKAA의 목표를 강화하기 위해 전문성을 가진 연구자를 지원하고, 아카이브의 발전을 도모하기 위해 마련되었다. 황란 작가는 2004년 알재단 Visual Art Award의 첫 수상자로, 이후 AKAA의 발전을 위한 이번 기금 설립과 운영을 적극적으로 지원해 왔다.

전민지(Minji Chun)는 미술사학자이자 평론가다. 옥스퍼드대학교(University of Oxford) 미술사(History of Art) 분야에서 Postdoctoral Associate Member로 활동하고 있으며, 최근 DPhil 학위를 취득했다(2026). 그녀의 연구는 현대 및 동시대 동아시아 미술을 중심으로 하며, 특히 사회 참여적 미술과 그 사회적·역사적 맥락에 관심을 두고 있다. ArtAsiaPacific, Gravity Effect, Art & Market, Architectural Critics Journal 등으로부터 수상 경력이 있으며, Art Journal, Burlington Contemporary, FIELD: A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism, Hyundai Artlab, 월간미술 등에 글을 발표했다. 박사과정에 진학하기 전에는 국립현대미술관과 한국문화예술진흥원에서 근무했으며, 독립 큐레이터로서 다양한 프로젝트를 진행했다.
