AHL Foundation Hosts Fundraising Event at Renowned Sculptor John Pai’s Residence

On Saturday, May 17, the AHL Foundation (President: Sook Nyu Lee Kim), a nonprofit organization supporting Korean and Korean American artists, held an intimate fundraising event at the residence of John Pai, a pioneering Korean American sculptor and leading figure in American contemporary art. The event was organized in support of the Foundation’s Space UpTown program.

John Pai immigrated to the United States with his family in 1949 and went on to study sculpture and mathematics at Pratt Institute. In 1965, he became the youngest-ever faculty member at the institution, where he taught until 2000. Known for his experimental work using steel as his primary medium, Pai is regarded as a pioneering figure in the history of American contemporary sculpture.

Since its founding in 2003, the AHL Foundation has supported the advancement of Korean contemporary art and the creative practices of Korean and Korean American artists through exhibitions, educational programs, public lectures, and the development of an artist archive. The recent fundraising event was a meaningful gathering hosted in collaboration with John Pai, who generously opened his home in support of the Foundation’s vision.

Attendees included AHL Foundation board members, gallerists, curators, artists, and art enthusiasts from the New York Korean American arts community. Guests explored Pai’s home and studio nestled in a beautiful natural setting, where his sculptural works were displayed alongside pieces by Whanki Kim and other curated crafts. The event also featured a heartfelt meal prepared by the artist’s wife, Eun Sook Bae, offering an intimate space for reflection on Pai’s artistic journey and life story.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체인 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 지난 5월 17일(토), 미국 현대 조각을 대표하는 재미 예술가 존 배(John Pai) 작가의 자택에서 Space UpTown 프로그램을 위한 소규모 기금 모금 행사를 개최했다.

존 배 작가는 1949년 가족과 함께 미국으로 이주한 후 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute)에서 조각과 수학을 전공하고, 1965년 해당 기관의 최연소 교수로 임용되어 2000년까지 재직했다. 그는 철을 주재료로 독창적이고 실험적인 조각 작업을 선보이며, 미국 현대 조각사에서 독보적인 위치를 확립한 작가로 평가받고 있다.

알재단은 2003년 설립 이래, 한국 현대미술의 발전과 한인 미술인의 창작 활동을 지원하기 위해 전시, 교육 프로그램, 대중 강연, 작가 아카이브 구축 등 다양한 사업을 펼쳐왔다. 알재단의 비전에 공감한 존 배 작가가 코네티컷에 위치한 자택을 개방하며 함께 마련한 자리로, 작가의 깊은 예술 세계와 후원 정신을 나누는 뜻깊은 시간이었다.

이날 행사에는 알재단 이사진을 비롯해 뉴욕 문화예술계 인사, 갤러리스트, 큐레이터, 작가 및 예술 애호가들이 참석했다. 참가자들은 아름다운 자연 속에 자리한 자택과 작업실에서 존 배 작가의 대표 조각 작품은 물론, 김환기 화백의 그림과 다양한 공예품 등 소장품이 어우러진 공간을 감상했다. 또한, 작가의 아내 배은숙 여사가 정성스럽게 준비한 음식을 함께 나누며, 작가의 예술적 여정과 삶에 대한 깊은 이야기를 나누는 시간을 가졌다.
