New York, NY – June 26, 2025 – On June 21, 2025, AHL Foundation (President: Sook Nyu Lee Kim), a nonprofit organization supporting Korean and Korean diasporic visual artists, hosted an artist talk and a guided tour of the Archive of Korean Artists in America(AKAA) Room as part of its ongoing programming for Echoes of Han: Fragments of Self, Memory, Identity, and Transformation (hereafter Echoes of Han), the Foundation’s first alumni group exhibition. The exhibition is currently on view at AHL Foundation Gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030) from June 7 through July 3, 2025.

The exhibition features twelve Korean and Korean American alumni artists who have previously received support from AHL Foundation through its Contemporary Visual Art Awards, fellowships, or scholarships: Seongmin Ahn, Heejung Cho, Sung Ho Choi, Tai Hwa Goh, Hong Seon Jang, DeepPond Kim, Suzy Taekyung Kim, Judy Junghee Koo, Kakyoung Lee, Eunsook Lee, Jiyoun Lee-Lodge, and Jayoung Yoon. 

Echoes of Han is part of the inaugural 2024 AHL-Founder S.N. Kim Grant Exhibition series, launched with the generous support of President Sook Nyu Lee Kim. The series began with a solo exhibition by Ran Hwang, the first recipient of the Foundation’s Contemporary Visual Art Award in 2004, and continues with this first-ever group show initiated and organized by AHL alumni.

Established in 2013, the Archive of Korean Artists in America(AKAA) collects and preserves critical archival materials from over 150 Korean heritage artists active in the U.S. The AKAA Room houses documents including photos, exhibition catalogues, diaries, personal notes, and publications related to the artists’ creative processes. The archive is open to the public by appointment, and its contents are also available through the AKAA website.

The artist talk featured artists Heejung Cho, Jayoung Yoon, and Sung Ho Choi, who spoke about the concepts and stories behind their works on view. Visitors had the opportunity to engage directly with the artists while viewing the exhibition. Following the talk, Jiyoung Lee, Director of AHL Foundation, led a tour of the AKAA Room and introduced the project’s mission and history, along with a walkthrough of the AKAA website. The program concluded with a conversation on the role and importance of archival practice, led by Dr. Soojung Hyun, Research Fellow at AHL Foundation, and artist Sung Ho Choi.

President Sook Nyu Lee Kim remarked, “It was a meaningful day in which the Foundation’s past and future came together through the long-standing AKAA project and our first-ever alumni group exhibition. AHL Foundation remains committed to supporting and documenting the work of Korean and Korean diasporic artists in the U.S., and we hope you will look forward to the newly redesigned AKAA website, coming soon.”

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체인 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 지난 6월 21일 첫 번째 알재단 동문 그룹전 “Echoes of Han: Fragments of Self, Memory, Identity, and Transformation | 한(恨)의 메아리: 자아, 기억, 정체성, 그리고 변형의 파편들(이하: 한의 메아리)”의 연계 프로그램으로 작가들이 참여하는 아티스트 토크와 재미한인작가 아카이브 프로젝트인 AKAA(The Archive of Korean Artists in America)룸 투어를 진행했다. 본 전시는 2025년 6월 7일부터 7월 3일까지 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd. #C1, New York, NY 10030)에서 진행 중이다.

알재단의 동문 그룹전 한의 메아리에는 알재단의 현대미술상(AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards), 장학금, 펠로우십 등을 수상한 알재단 동문(Alumni Artists) 한인 작가 고태화, 구정희, 김다연, 김태경, 안성민, 윤자영, 이가경, 이은숙, 이지연–로지, 장홍선, 조희정, 최성호 총 12명이 참여했다. 이번 전시는 이숙녀 알재단 회장의 후원으로 시작된 ‘2024 제1회 알재단 설립자 이숙녀 회장 그랜트(AHL-Founder S.N.Kim Grant Exhibition)’ 시리즈의 일환으로, 제1회 수상자인 황란 작가(2004년 현대미술상 수상)의 초대전에 이어 동문 작가들이 함께 기획한 첫 그룹전이라는 점에서 의미가 깊다.

재미한인작가 아카이브 프로젝트 AKAA는 2013년에 설립되어, 현재까지 150명이 넘는 미주 한인 예술가들의 주요 아카이브 자료를 수집·보존해 오고 있다. 한인 예술가들의 중요한 아카이브 자료를 수집하고 보존해 왔다. 작업 과정을 담은 사진, 전시 도록, 일기장, 개인 노트, 관련 서적 등이 보관된 AKAA 아카이브 룸은 예약제로 대중 열람이 가능하며, AKAA 웹사이트를 통해서도 자료를 확인할 수 있다.

이날 아티스트 토크에는 조희정, 윤자영, 최성호 작가가 참여해 전시 작품에 대한 설명을 직접 전했다. 참가자들은 작가들과 함께 작품을 둘러보며, 창작 배경과 작가적 관점에 대한 생생한 이야기를 듣는 시간을 가졌다. 이어진 AKAA 룸 투어에서는 알재단 이지영 디렉터가 프로젝트의 역사와 목적을 소개하고, 참석자들과 함께 AKAA 웹사이트의 주요 콘텐츠를 살펴보았다. 이어서 알재단 리서치 펠로우인 현수정 박사와 작가 최성호가 아카이브의 의의와 향후 과제에 대해 의견을 나누었다. 

이숙녀 알재단 대표는 “알재단이 오랫동안 이어온 AKAA 프로젝트와 처음 선보이는 동문 전시가 함께한 오늘은, 알재단의 과거와 미래가 만나는 뜻깊은 하루였다”라며, “앞으로도 미주 한인 작가들의 성장과 발전을 후원하고 그 기록을 남기는 일을 계속 이어갈 것이다. 많은 관심 부탁드리며, 곧 새롭게 단장할 AKAA 웹사이트도 기대해 주시길 바란다”고 전했다.
