AHL재단, 전통 민화 워크숍 성황리에 마무리

(뉴욕, 2025년 8월 5일) — 알재단(AHL Foundation, inc, 대표 이숙녀)은 지난 8월 2일(토), 뉴욕 할렘에 위치한 알재단 갤러리에서 전통 민화 워크숍을 성공적으로 개최했다. 이번 워크숍은 현재 전시 중인 《과거의 두가지 활용(Two Uses of the Past)》의 참여 작가 안성민이 직접 진행했으며, 다양한 연령과 배경을 지닌 참가자들이 함께 전통 회화의 색다른 매력을 체험하는 시간을 가졌다.
민화는 조선 후기 민간에서 꽃피운 대중적 회화 장르로, 장수와 복을 기원하는 의미를 담고 있다. 워크숍에서는 한지, 아교, 한국화 물감, 먹 등 전통 화구를 직접 사용해 민화의 채색 기법과 상징을 배우고, 참가자들이 각자 엽서 크기의 민화 작품을 완성하는 실습 중심의 수업이 진행되었다.
알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “민화를 처음 접한 참가자들이 한국 전통문화에 큰 흥미를 느끼고, 각자의 감성과 해석으로 그림을 완성하는 과정이 매우 인상 깊었다”며 “영어·한국어 수업을 병행하여 접근성을 높였고, 수강신청 접수 시작과 동시에 많은 문의가 있었다. 앞으로도 알재단은 한국 미술을 전시뿐 아니라 교육 프로그램을 통해서도 지속적으로 소개할 예정”이라고 전했다.
이번 워크숍은 2025년 7월 26일(토)부터 8월 23일(토)까지 열리는 안성민·지창보 작가의 2인전 《과거의 활용 방식(Two Uses of the Past)》의 연계 프로그램으로 기획되었으며, 뉴욕 시민들이 한국 전통문화에 직접 참여하고 교류할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 목적으로 운영되었다. AHL재단은 앞으로도 다양한 전시 및 커뮤니티 연계 프로그램을 통해 지역사회 참여를 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획이다.

AHL Foundation Concludes Traditional Minhwa Workshop with Strong Community Engagement

New York, August 5, 2025 — AHL Foundation (President: Sook Nyu Lee Kim) successfully held a traditional Minhwa (Korean folk painting) workshop on Saturday, August 2 at its gallery in Harlem. The program was led by artist Seongmin Ahn, a featured participant in the current exhibition Two Uses of the Past, and drew participants of various ages and backgrounds who gathered to experience the beauty and meaning of traditional Korean painting techniques.
Originating in the late Joseon Dynasty, Minhwa is a popular Korean folk art form created by anonymous or itinerant artists, often used to express wishes for longevity, prosperity, and protection. During the hands-on workshop, participants used traditional materials such as hanji (Korean mulberry paper), agyo (animal glue), natural pigments, and ink to explore folk painting techniques and symbolism, culminating in the creation of postcard-sized works of art.
“A number of attendees were encountering Minhwa and Korean traditional arts for the first time, and it was moving to see them connect to the process through their own interpretations,” said Sook Nyu Lee Kim, President of AHL Foundation. “To enhance accessibility, we offered sessions in both English and Korean, and received a high volume of inquiries as soon as registration opened. AHL Foundation is committed to introducing Korean art not only through exhibitions but also through educational programming.”
The workshop was presented in conjunction with Two Uses of the Past, a two-person exhibition featuring artists Seongmin Ahn and Changboh Chee, on view from July 26 through August 23, 2025. It was designed to provide local New Yorkers with a direct and engaging experience of Korean visual culture.
