AHL Foundation Awards 2025 Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Foundation Project Grant to Junho Peter Yoon and Tamara Khasanova

New York, NY — September 30, 2025 — AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Korean and Korean American artists, is pleased to announce that Junho Peter Yoon and Tamara Khasanova have been awarded the 2025 AHL – Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Foundation Project Grant. The grant will support Yoon and Khasanova’s collective curatorial project, which examines the history and identity of the Koryo Saram—ethnic Koreans who were displaced across the Soviet Union during the 20th century. Using the concept of the “post-diasporic,” the exhibition highlights the complexity of belonging, displacement, and memory. The exhibition is scheduled to open in March 2026 at the AHL Foundation Gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030). 

Junho Peter Yoon is a doctoral candidate in East Asian Studies at New York University and the Assistant Director of the Center for Korean Research and the Unson Microcollege Program at Columbia University. He received his B.A. in Comparative Literature from Rutgers University and an M.A. in the Humanities from the University of Chicago. His research spans critical theory, cultural studies, ethics, and ecological thought, with a particular focus on modern and contemporary Korean literature, film, and history. His dissertation, Toward Planetary Ethics, explores the ethical and political impasses of the Anthropocene through a close engagement with Korean cultural texts. He has worked with journals and institutions such as e-flux Journal, Screening Room, the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, and the New York Asian Film Festival. He is currently co-editing two special issues on global Asian photography and the archive, and posthuman visuality in contemporary South Korean art and media.

Tamara Khasanova is an independent curator, researcher, and writer based in Brooklyn, New York, originally from Ukraine and Uzbekistan. She was a 2024–25 Helena Rubinstein Curatorial Fellow in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program (ISP) and holds an MA degree in Curatorial Practice from the School of Visual Arts. Her research and curatorial work center emergent aesthetics, pedagogical and discursive practices, and forms of collective knowledge production, oriented toward questions of language, ecology, nuclear legacies, and colonial histories. She has curated exhibitions, organized screenings, lectured, and contributed to projects across cultural, publishing, and educational institutions including e-flux, Protocinema, Davra Curatorial Lab, White Columns, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Clark Art Institute, the Queens Museum, and TransitoryWhite, among others. She currently serves as Studio Director for the artist duo Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme and is part of the adisciplinary publishing platform Bilna’es. 

Since its launch in 2016, the grant has supported artists including Nicholas Oh, Xavier Cha, Sun You, Sunhee Jung, Aram Han Sifuentes, Mina Cheon, Mire Lee, and Priscilla Jeong. Beginning in 2025, the fund will transition into an internal exhibition fund dedicated to fully supporting AHL Foundation–organized exhibitions and projects, creating a sustainable platform for Korean artists to present their work in alignment with the Foundation’s mission.

알재단, 2025년도 ‘알-앤드류 바바라 최 패밀리 재단 프로젝트 그랜트’ 수상자에 윤준호·타마라 카사노바 선정

비영리 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 2025년 ‘알-앤드류 바바라 최 패밀리 파운데이션 프로젝트 그랜트(AHL–Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Foundation Project Grant)’의 수상자로 윤준호(Junho Peter Yoon)와 타마라 카사노바(Tamara Khasanova)를 선정했다. 본 그랜트는 윤준호와 타마라 카사노바의 공동 기획 전시 프로젝트를 지원할 예정이며, 전시는 고려사람(Koryo Saram)—20세기 동안 구소련 지역으로 강제 이주된 한인 디아스포라—의 역사와 정체성을 탐구한다. 전시는 ‘포스트-디아스포라(post-diasporic)’라는 개념을 통해 소속, 이주, 기억의 복합성을 조명하며 2026년 3월 중 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030)에서 개최 될 예정이다. 

윤준호는 뉴욕대학교 동아시아학 박사 과정에 재학 중이며, 컬럼비아대학교 한국연구소와 Unson Microcollege Program의 부소장을 맡고 있다. 그는 러트거스 대학교에서 비교문학 학사, 시카고 대학교에서 인문학 석사를 취득했다. 그의 연구는 비평이론, 문화연구, 윤리학, 생태사상을 아우르며, 특히 현대 및 동시대 한국 문학, 영화, 역사에 중점을 둔다. 박사학위 논문 「Toward Planetary Ethics」는 한국 문화 텍스트를 통해 인류세의 윤리적·정치적 교착 상태를 탐구한다. 윤준호는 e-flux Journal, Screening Room, 한국문학번역원, 뉴욕 아시아 영화제 등과 협력해왔으며, 현재 『positions: asia critique』의 “(Un)Archived: The Elsewhere of Photography”와 『Journal of Asian Studies』의 “Beyond the Visual: Posthuman Sensoria in Contemporary South Korean Art and Media” 등 두 개의 특집호를 공동 편집 중이다. 

타마라 카사노바는 우크라이나와 우즈베키스탄 출신으로, 현재 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 독립 큐레이터, 연구자, 작가이다. 2024–25년 휘트니 미술관 인디펜던트 스터디 프로그램(Independent Study Program)의 헬레나 루빈스타인 큐레토리얼 펠로우였으며, 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트(School of Visual Arts)에서 큐레토리얼 프랙티스 석사학위를 받았다. 그녀의 연구와 큐레토리얼 작업은 새로운 미학, 교육적·담론적 실천, 집단적 지식 생산 방식을 중심으로 언어, 생태, 핵 유산, 식민지 역사와 같은 주제에 초점을 맞춘다. 그녀는 e-flux, Protocinema, Davra Curatorial Lab, White Columns, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Clark Art Institute, Queens Museum, TransitoryWhite 등 여러 기관과 협력해 전시, 상영, 강연, 출판 프로젝트를 진행해왔다. 현재는 아티스트 듀오 바셀 아바스와 루안느 아부라흐메의 스튜디오 디렉터로 활동하며, 다학제적 출판 플랫폼 Bilna’es의 멤버로도 활동 중이다.

한편, 2016년 출범 이후 본 그랜트는 니콜라스 오(Nicholas Oh), 자비에르 차(Xavier Cha), 선 유(Sun You), 정선희(Sunhee Jung), 아람 한 시푸엔테스(Aram Han Sifuentes), 미나 천(Mina Cheon), 미래 리(Mire Lee), 프리실라 정(Priscilla Jeong) 등 여러 작가들을 지원해왔다. 2025년부터는 알재단이 직접 주관하는 전시 및 프로젝트를 전적으로 후원하는 내부 전시 기금으로 전환되어, 한국 작가들이 알재단의 미션에 부합하는 작업을 선보일 수 있는 지속 가능한 플랫폼을 마련할 예정이다.
