The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean artists (President: Sook Nyu Lee Kim), has announced the recipients of the 22nd Annual AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards. This year’s honorees are Heejo Kim, Jewan Goo, and Hyunjin Park. Departing from the traditional Gold, Silver, and Bronze distinctions, all three artists will receive an equal exhibition support grant of $5,000. In addition to financial support for their artistic practices, the selected artists will participate in a group exhibition to be held at the AHL Foundation Gallery in October 2025.
Established in 2003, the Contemporary Visual Art Awards is one of the AHL Foundation’s flagship programs, supporting contemporary visual artists of Korean heritage based in the United States. Since 2016, the awards have been generously supported by the T&W Foundation, founded by Thomas Park Clement and Wonsook Kim.
This year’s jurors included Ian Wallace, Curator at Amant Foundation; Jeffrey Lee, Partner at RYAN LEE Gallery; and Leeza Meksin, Professor at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.

Heejo Kim (b. 1995, Seoul, South Korea) received an MFA degree in May 2023 from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. She received her BFA from the Painting program at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea, in 2018.
Kim’s figurative oil paintings focus on reestablishing identity and existence through relationships with others and objects. Her practice explores ambiguity by dissolving visible markers of identity such as gender, age, and ethnicity, allowing her figures to quietly “be” rather than act. Informed by the Buddhist concept of Dependent Arising (Yeongi-sull) and Roland Barthes’s notion of tenderness as an ethical mode of being-with, Kim’s work embraces the uncertain space between self and other, where understanding is incomplete but connection is still possible. Her figures linger in stillness, their gestures whispering a quiet will.

Jewan Goo (b.1994, Seoul, South Korea) is a research-based visual artist whose image-based practice interrogates colonial juridical visibility through the analytic frameworks of visual culture studies and critical theory. His practice mobilizes forensic excavation and countervisual strategies to expose the regimes of documentation and legal architectures that engineer historical legitimacy and codify ideological narratives within state archives. Drawing on postcustodial archival theory and decolonial praxis, Goo engages in palimpsestic interventions, reconstructing visually undocumented histories and revealing the epistemic violence embedded in archival silences.
By treating shadow archives as contested sites, he asserts representational sovereignty and recuperates subjugated knowledge through images that challenge institutional authority and disrupt hegemonic frameworks. His research excavates how imperial scopic regimes, spatial dispositifs, and juridical infrastructures structure exclusion, mediate access to collective narratives, and naturalize power. Grounded in the analysis of state apparatuses and disciplinary power, Goo reconstructs the ways institutionalized epistemologies shape the perceptual and symbolic orders of the present.
Goo holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a 2025–2027 Core Program Fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Hyunjin Park (b.1991, Seoul, South Korea) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in New York and Seoul. Working across performance, video, installation, and sculpture, Park explores the affective presence of non-human beings from living creatures to machines, and how they unsettle boundaries between modern and ancient, life and death, human and non-human.
Her solo exhibition was held at Gallery OOOJH in Seoul (2022), and she will present two upcoming solo exhibitions at Gallery Chamber in Seoul and Open Space Bae in Busan, both in 2025. She has also participated in group exhibitions such as the Total Museum (Seoul), Onsugonggan (Seoul), Hui Gallery (Hong Kong) among others.
Park has been selected for several international residency programs, including Domaine de Boisbuchet in Lessac, France (2024, supported by the Youngmin International Art Program), the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT (2024, fellowship), and the Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY (2025). She will also participate in the Watermill Center residency in 2025.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 2025년 제22회 현대미술 공모전(AHL-T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards)의 수상자를 발표했다. 올해도 교육계, 갤러리, 문화기관 등 다양한 배경을 가진 심사위원이 참여하여 1차 심사와 2차 토론의 과정을 거쳐 최종 수상 작가로 김희조, 구제완, 박현진을 선정하였다. 기존의 금·은·동상 수상 형식을 없애고, 세 작가 모두에게 각각 5,000달러의 전시 지원금을 수여한다.
최종 3인의 수상 작가는 작품 활동을 위한 기금과 오는 2025년 10월 알재단에서 열리는 그룹전에 참여할 기회를 얻는다. 2003년 재단 설립과 함께 시작된 알재단 현대미술상은 미국 내에서 활동하는 한국계 현대미술 작가들을 지원하는 연례 프로그램으로, 2016년 부터는 T&W 재단(대표: 토마스 클레멘트(Thomas Park Clement) & 김원숙(Wonsook Kim))의 후원으로 운영되고 있다.
한편, 올해 현대미술상 심사 위원으로는 아만트(Amant)재단 큐레이터인 이안 월리스(Ian Wallace), 라이언 리 갤러리(RYAN LEE Gallery)의 파트너 제프리 리 (Jeffrey Lee), 코넬 대학교 건축예술대학(Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning)의 교수 엘리자베타 멕신(Leeza Meksin)가 참여했다.
김희조(Heejo Kim)는 2018년에는 서울 홍익대학교 회화과에서 BFA(미술학 학사)를 취득하였으며, 메릴랜드 예술대학(Maryland Institute College of Art)의 LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting 프로그램에서 2023년 5월 MFA(미술학 석사) 학위를 취득하였다.
김희조의 인물 유화 작품은 타인 및 대상과의 관계를 통해 정체성을 재구성하는 데 초점을 맞춘다. 그녀는 성별, 나이, 민족성 등 가시적인 정체성 표식을 해체하며 모호성을 탐구한다. 타자와 개인의 경계가 흐려진 작품 속 인물들은, 그들의 몸짓을 통해 ‘행동’보단 ‘함께 고독하기’와 같은 친밀함을 보여준다. 불교의 연기(緣起) 개념과 롤랑 바르트가 말한 ‘함께 있음’의 윤리적 방식으로서의 ‘부드러움(tenderness)’ 개념에서 영향을 받은 김희조의 작업은 ‘나’와 ‘타자’ 사이에서 완전한 이해의 불가로 인한 고립이 아닌, 존재란 끊임없이 타자와의 관계 속에서 생성된다는 것을 말하고자 한다. 작품 속 인물들은 이 공간에 머무르며, 바디 랭귀지를 통해 서로를 마주하고, 감응하고, 연결되고자 하는 조용한 의지를 전한다.
구제완(Jewan Goo)은 연구 기반의 시각 예술가로, 시각 문화 연구와 비평 이론의 분석적 틀을 통해 식민주의적 법적 가시성을 비판적으로 탐구한다. 그는 이미지 기반 작업을 통해 국가 기록 보관소에 축적된 역사적 정당성과 이념적 서사를 구축하는 문서화 체계와 법적 구조를 법의학적 발굴 및 반시각적 전략으로 드러낸다. 그의 작업은 탈 구금 기록 이론과 탈식민적 실천을 바탕으로, 팔림프세스틱적 개입(palimpsestic intervention: 기존 기록 위에 새로운 해석을 덧입히는 방식)을 통해 시각적으로 기록되지 않은 역사를 재구성하고, 기록 보관소의 침묵에 내재한 인식론적 폭력을 드러낸다.
구제완은 그림자 기록 보관소를 쟁점화된 장소로 삼으며, 제도적 권위에 도전하고 헤게모니적 틀을 전복하는 이미지를 통해 재현의 주권을 주장하고 억압된 지식을 회복한다. 그의 연구는 제국주의적 시각 체제, 공간적 장치, 그리고 법적 인프라가 어떻게 배제를 구조화하고 집단적 서사에 대한 접근을 조절하며, 권력을 자연화하는지 탐구한다. 국가 기구와 규율 권력에 대한 분석을 토대로, 그는 제도화된 인식 체계가 오늘날의 지각적·상징적 질서를 어떻게 형성하는지를 재구성한다.
구제완은 펜실베이니아 대학(University of Pennsylvania)에서 MFA 학위를 취득했으며, 2025~2027년 휴스턴 미술관(Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)의 Core Program Fellow로 활동할 예정이다.
박현진(Hyunjin Park)은 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 조각, 영상, 퍼포먼스, 설치 작가이자 연구자로, 인간과 비인간 동물 사이의 역사적이고 정서적인 연결을 추적하며, 현대와 과거, 삶과 죽음, 인간, 동물, 기계 사이에 그어진 경계들이 어떻게 흐려지는지를 탐구한다.
2022년 갤러리 의외의조합에서 개인전을 열었고, 2025년에는 챔버(서울)와 오픈스페이스 배(부산)에서 개인전이 예정되어 있으며, 토탈미술관, 온수공간, 홍콩 후이 갤러리 등에서 열린 단체전에 참여했다. 한화 영민문화재단 선정 작가로 프랑스 Domaine de Boisbuchet(2024)에 참여했고, 버몬트 스튜디오 센터 펠로우십(Vermont Studio Center Fellowships, 2024), 와사익 프로젝트(Wassaic Project, 2025), 워터밀 센터 레지던시(The Watermill Center Artist Residency Program, 2025) 등 다수의 국제 레지던시에 선정되었다.
