AHL Foundation Names Dr. Mina Cheon as 2025 Recipient of the AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund
New York, NY – The AHL Foundation is proud to announce Dr. Mina Cheon as the 2025 recipient of the AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund. Established in 2022 through the generosity of renowned artist Ran Hwang, this fund supports selected Research Fellows in advancing the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) and preserving the legacy of Korean diasporic artists.
As part of the 2025–2026 fellowship, Dr. Cheon will receive a research grant to contribute to the AKAA through cataloging and digitizing archival materials, conducting scholarly research, and leading publication projects. Her research proposal, “Here Comes the K-Fem Art Girls: The New Generation of Korean Feminist Artists of New York,” explores Millennial and Gen Z Korean feminist artists active in New York, bridging the global canon of Korean feminist art with the work of emerging diasporic artists. The project will serve as an intergenerational study on diaspora and transnational identity.
Dr. Cheon is the author of Shamanism + Cyberspace (Atropos Press, 2009), Professor Emerita and former Dean of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and an artist, scholar, cultural producer, and human rights advocate. She has contributed writings to ArtUS, Wolgan Misool, New York Arts Magazine, and Artist Organized Art, and was an editor of the academic journal Media-N. As a global Korean political pop new media artist, her recent projects include merging art and comedy, as well as peacebuilding with laughter, coinciding with her art retrospective, “Haunted Koreas,” at KODA NY. Cheon is represented by the Ethan Cohen Gallery and collaborates with the Stephanie Kim Gallery, both in New York.

I am honored to receive the 2025-2026 Ran Hwang AKAA Research Fellowship from the AHL Foundation. This fellowship enables me to conduct independent research and pursue a project examining the connections between past, present, and new generations of Korean American feminist artists, serving as a critical intergenerational study on diaspora and transnational identity, while contributing new material for the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA). I’m grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank the Foundation for its key role in supporting Korean American artists and scholars, as well as bringing visibility to Korean American creative and scholarly practices in contemporary art.

비영리 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 2025년도 ‘AHL-AKAA Ran Hwang Fund(알-AKAA 황란 펀드)’ 수상자로 천미나 박사(Dr. Mina Cheon)를 선정했다고 발표했다.
알-AKAA 황란 펀드는 중견작가 황란의 후원으로 2022년에 설립된 기금으로, 한인 미술 및 디아스포라 작가 연구를 이어가는 연구자를 지원하기 위해 운영되고 있다. 선정된 연구자는 연구 기금을 받아 재미한인미술인 아카이브(Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA) 관련 자료 조사, 분류, 데이터베이스 구축, 그리고 출판 프로젝트를 수행하게 된다.
2025–2026년도 연구 펠로우십에서 천 박사는 “Here Comes the K-Fem Art Girls: The New Generation of Korean Feminist Artists of New York”라는 연구 주제를 통해, 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하는 한국 밀레니얼·Z세대 여성 페미니스트 작가들을 탐구한다. 이번 연구는 한국 페미니즘 미술사 연구와 디아스포라 신세대 작가들을 연결하며, 한국 여성주의 미술의 세계적 계보 속에 뉴욕 기반 차세대 작가들의 정체성과 활동을 기록하고 비평적으로 조명하는 데 기여할 예정이다.
천 박사는 『Shamanism + Cyberspace』(Atropos Press, 2009)의 저자이자 메릴랜드 예술대학(MICA) 명예교수 및 전 학장으로, 학자이자 인권 옹호자, 그리고 글로벌 코리안 정치 팝 아티스트다. 최근 개인전 Haunted Koreas가 뉴욕 KODA에서 열렸으며, 현재 Ethan Cohen Gallery 소속 작가로 활동하고 있다.
