AHL Foundation Presents Two Uses of the Past: A Two-Person Exhibition Featuring Changboh Chee and Seongmin Ahn

New York, July 15, 2025 — The AHL Foundation is pleased to present Two Uses of the Past, a dual exhibition featuring the works of the late Professor Changboh Chee (1923–2023) and Seongmin Ahn. On view from July 26 to August 23, 2025, at AHL Foundation Gallery in Harlem, this exhibition marks the organization’s first curatorial integration of both its interior gallery space and its outdoor Murals on Display public art wall. 

The exhibition title is inspired by literary critic Van Wyck Brooks’s 1918 essay On Creating a Usable Past, which argued that history should not be preserved in a static form but continuously reinterpreted and repurposed from a contemporary perspective. In this spirit, Chee and Ahn present two divergent but complementary artistic responses to Korean cultural heritage: Chee honored tradition through preservation, emphasizing harmony and continuity, while Ahn engages tradition through transformation, reimagining historical symbols with a critical and playful eye. Together, their dialogue raises pressing questions: How can the past be called into the present? And how do artists choose to use or renew the traditions they inherit? 

The exhibition features over 30 ink paintings created by Changboh Chee between the 1960s and 2000s, alongside eight recent works by Seongmin Ahn, including her large-scale outdoor mural HUMANKIND ONE PLANET. Inspired by 19th-century Korean minhwa (folk painting) letter art, the mural reimagines the English alphabet using Korean calligraphic form (Gungseo-che), adorned with symbolic images from nature. The work reflects on cultural diversity, ecological awareness, and a shared global future. 

Born during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1923, Changboh Chee lived through war, exile, and political turmoil. After becoming separated from his family during the Korean War, he emigrated to the United States, where he earned his PhD in sociology from Duke University. From the 1960s, he taught at Long Island University while remaining a prominent advocate for South Korean democracy and reunification—delivering a petition with one million signatures to the UN Human Rights Commission in 1980 demanding the release of then-imprisoned dissident Kim Dae-jung. An intellectual and artist, Chee taught courses on East Asian art and Korean cinema in addition to sociology. From his late 30s, he also pursued Korean ink painting, forming friendships with prominent Korean artists such as Nam June Paik, Whanki Kim, Kim Tschang-yeul, and John Pai. His exhibitions in New York in the 1960s and 70s reflected his deep conviction that human well-being is rooted in the cycles of nature. His elegant brushwork and symbolic use of cranes, lotuses, boats, bamboo, and deer reveal a quiet moral resolve: despite living through injustice and war, he chose to depict peace, harmony, and compassion. His art was an act of hope. 

Seongmin Ahn earned her BFA and MFA in Korean painting from Seoul National University and her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Based in New York, Ahn has presented her work at major institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon, the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, and the Hello Museum (Seoul). Her work is in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Princeton University Art Museum, Hudson River Museum, Hello Museum, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, among other institutions. Ahn has received awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the CUE Art Foundation, AHL Foundation, and Café Royal Cultural Foundation. She has taught at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queens Museum, Queens College CUNY, the Art Students League of New York, and SVA. 

Ahn reinterprets symbols from traditional Korean landscape painting and minhwa through a contemporary perspective infused with humor and critical insight. She employs not only ink and hanji but also contemporary materials such as vinyl, laser-cut panels, and UV lighting to explore the boundaries between tradition and modernity, the everyday and technology, and to reflect on the complexities of identity in a globalized era. 

This exhibition was made possible through the generous support of the Changboh Chee Foundation. On Saturday, August 2, Seongmin Ahn will lead a public minhwa painting workshop. Registration is available via the AHL Foundation website (https://www.ahlfoundation.org). 

Two Uses of the Past will be on view from July 26 through August 23, 2025. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free. The outdoor mural HUMANKIND ONE PLANET is visible at all times on the exterior wall of AHL Foundation Gallery.

알재단, 지창보 & 안성민 2인전 “Two Uses of the Past” 개최 – 과거를 바라보는 두 가지 예술적 해석 조명 

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 2025년 7월 26일(토)부터 8월 23일(토)까지 알재단 갤러리에서 “Two Uses of the Past (과거의 두 가지 활용)” 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 알재단의 갤러리 외부 벽화 디스 플레이(Murals on Display)와 내부 전시 공간을 함께 큐레이팅한 최초의 전시(AHL Murals on Display & Gallery Exhibition)로 고(故) 지창보(Changboh Chee, 1923–2023) 교수와 안성민(Seongmin Ahn) 작가의 2인전이다. 

전시 제목 “Two Uses of the Past”는 문학 평론가 Van Wyck Brookes가 1918년에 발표한 에세이 “On Creating a Usable Past”에서 차용되었으며, 과거를 단순히 보존하는 것이 아니라 오늘의 관점에서 새롭게 조명하고 활용할 수 있어야 한다는 사유를 기반으로 한다. 지창보 작가는 전통을 있는 그대로 존중하며 조화와 균형, 보존의 가치를 강조하고, 안성민 작가는 전통을 현대적으로 변용하고 성찰하며 문화적 과거를 현재의 시점에서 재조명하게 한다. 이러한 두 예술 세계의 병렬적 만남은 전통과 혁신, 보존과 재해석, 존중과 유희, 본질주의와 관계성을 교차시키며 관람객으로 하여금 현재에서 과거를 어떻게 다시 호출하고 사용할 수 있을지 질문하게 한다. 

전시는 지창보 교수의 1960년대부터 2000년대 사이 작업한 작품 30여점과 안성민 작가의 다양한 소재, 색감을 담고 있는 작품 8점과 갤러리 외부 벽화에 작품 “HUMANKIND ONE PLANET”을 선보인다. 19세기 민화의 문자도 형식에서 착안한 벽화 작품으로, 문화적 다양성, 생태적 감수성, 그리고 지구 공동체에 대한 연대를 상징한다. 

2023년 타계한 지창보 교수는 1923년 일제 강점기에 태어나 한국 전쟁으로 가족과 생이별한 뒤 미국으로 이주, 듀크대학교에서 사회학 박사 학위를 취득했다. 1960년대부터는 롱아일랜드 대학 교수로서 그리고 워싱턴과 서울, UN 등에서 한국의 민주화와 남북통일을 위해 헌신하는 평화 운동가이자 지식인이었다. 1980년 사형선고를 받은 김대중 씨 석방을 요구하는 100만 명 서명부를 모아 유엔 인권위원회에 전달한 것도 그이다. 한편, 그는 뛰어난 예술가이기도 했는데, 롱아일랜드 대학에서 본인의 전공인 사회학뿐만 아니라 한국 영화와 동아시아 미술을 가르쳤을 정도로 그의 폭넓은 문화적 능력과 역량을 보여준다. 30대부터 한국화에 매진한 지 교수는 백남준, 김창열, 김보현·김환기, 한용진, 존배 등 당대 뛰어난 한인 예술인들과 교류 하며 뉴욕에서 10여 차례 전시를 열기도 했다. 그는 전통적 재료인 먹과 붓을 사용해 학, 연꽃, 배, 대나무, 사슴 등 한국 고유의 전통적 상징을 단순하고도 생명력 있는 선으로 담아내며, 인간의 행복이 자연의 순환 속에 뿌리내린다는 깊은 신념을 전한다. 작가는 전쟁, 망명, 정치 투쟁을 겪으며 평화와 자비의 가치를 자신의 영혼 안에서 발견했고, 예술을 통해 평화의 꿈을 전하고자 했다. 

안성민 작가는 서울대학교에서 한국화 전공으로 학사와 석사 학위를 취득하고, 미국 메릴랜드 미술대학(MICA)에서 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 현대 미술계에서 활발히 활동 중이다. 국립현대미술관(서울), 오리건대 조던 슈니처 미술관, 스토니브룩대 왕센터, 헬로뮤지엄(서울) 등 주요 기관에서 작품을 선보였으며, 폴록 크래스너(Pollock-Krasner Foundation), 큐 아트재단(CUE Art Foundation), 알재단(AHL Foundation), 카페 로얄 문화재단(Café Royal Cultural Foundation) 등에서 수상한 경력이 있다. 안성민 작가의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 프린스턴대 미술관 등 유수 기관에 소장되어 있으며 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 퀸스 미술관 등에서 강의하는 등 교육 현장에도 활발히 기여하고 있다. 안 작가는 한국 전통 산수화와 민화에서 볼 수 있는 상징을 현대적 시선과 유머, 비판적 시각으로 재해석한다. 먹과 한지뿐 아니라 비닐, 레이저 컷 소재, UV 조명 등 현대적인 소재를 활용하여 전통과 현대, 일상과 기술의 경계를 넘나들며 국제화 시대의 복합적 정체성을 탐구한다. 

이번 전시는 지창보 재단의 전폭적인 후원으로 성사되었다. 8월 2일(토)에는 안성민 작가가 직접 대중을 대상으로 민화 워크숍을 진행하며 신청은 웹사이트(https://www.ahlfoundation.org)를 통해 할 수 있다. 오프닝 리셉션은 7월 26일(토) 오후 4시부터 6시까지 진행되며, 전시는 8월 23일(토)까지 매주 수요일부터 토요일까지 갤러리 운영 시간(12:00 PM–6:00 PM)에 관람할 수 있다. 갤러리 외부 벽화 작품 “HUMANKIND ONE PLANET”은 상시 관람할 수 있다. 입장료 무료. 문의: info@ahlfoundation.org

  

[별첨 1] 참여 작가 

지창보 (Changboh Chee) 는 듀크대학교에서 사회학 박사학위를 받은 학자이자 전통 문인화를 평생 실천한 예술가이다. 일제강점기 일본 유학 중 학도병 징집 연설에 공개 항거해 블랙리스트에 올랐으며, 6.25 전쟁 중 보도연맹 관련 누명을 쓰고 처형 직전까지 가는 등 한국 현대사의 가장 격동적인 시기를 온몸으로  살아낸 인물이다.   이후 미국으로 이주해 반전운동, 한국 민주화·통일운동에 앞장섰으며, 김대중 대통령 석방을 촉구하는 백만인 서명을 UN에 전달하기도 했다. 1971년, 정전 이후 북미 출신 한국계 최초로 북한을 방문하여 가족과 재회했으며, KCIA의 감시 대상이 되면서도 정치적 신념을 꺾지 않았다. 사회학 교수로서 롱아일랜드 대학교에서 한국 사회와 동아시아 미술, 한국 영화를 강의했으며, 예술가로서는 서예 수련을 바탕으로 수묵과 담채를 활용한 문인화를 평생 이어왔다. 그의 작품은 학, 연꽃, 배, 사슴, 대나무 등 한국 전통 상징을 단순하고 생동감 있는 선으로 담아내며, 자연의 질서와 인간의 평화로운 공존을 노래한다. 김환기, 김창렬, 존 배, 백남준 등과 교류하며 1960–70년대 맨해튼에서 활발한 예술 활동을 펼쳤고, 김환기 작고 후에는 유족의 요청으로 지창보 교수 장례를 주관하기도 했다. 2023년 타계 후, 그가 남긴 작품과 기록은 지창보재단을 통해 연구 및 보존되고 있다. 지성, 예술, 실천을 아우른 그의 삶은 회고록 『고독과 자유』(책봄, 2022)에 고스란히 담겨 있다.

안성민은서울대학교와메릴랜드미술대학원  Maryland InstituteCollegeofArt에서수학했다.  민화를 모티브로 전통과 현대, 동양과 서양의 여러 요소를 그만의 해학적이고 초현실적인  시각으로 해석, 발전시킨 최근의 작업들이 특히 주목받고 있다. 전통을 현대화하고 동시대를 새롭게 해석하고자 하는 그의 작품에는  다양하게 상반되는 요소들의 매력적인 조화가  돋보인다. 폴락 크래스너 그랜트 2회 수상, CUE Art Foundation, AHL Foundation, Café Royal Cultural Foundation 등으로부터 수상하였으며, 국립현대미술관, 허드슨 리버 뮤지엄, 오레곤 대학교 미술관, 찰스 왕 센터, 헬로우뮤지움, 스페이스 C, 강 컬렉션 등에서 뉴욕과 한국을 중심으로 25여회의 개인전과 수많은 그룹전에 참가하였다. 국립현대 미술관, 프린스턴 대학교 뮤지엄, 허드슨 리버 뮤지엄, 헬로우뮤지움, 오레곤 대학교 조던 슈니처 뮤지엄, 존스 홉킨스 병원 등의 다수 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 코리아나 화장품, 쇼엔텔 남성복과 콜라보를 하였다. 마음산책 출간 ‘뉴욕의 속살’ 저자이며, Maryland Institute College of Art, Queens College CUNY, Artists League of New York, SVA summer 등에 출강 하였다.
