The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean artists, is presenting a solo exhibition by SOONNAM KIM as part of its Art in the Workplace program. The exhibition is being held at the Bank of Hope Manhattan Branch (16 West 32nd Street, New York, NY 10001).

The works presented in this exhibition are part of SOONNAM KIM’s “New Symphony” series, specifically the small-scale painting collection titled “Serenade: Harmony.” Utilizing palette knives, the artist focuses on the formative elements of dots, lines, and colors, employing an action painting style to completely fill the canvas with oil paints of various colors, visually embodying the dynamic and harmonious waves of the universe akin to Western classical symphony music. 

Among the New Symphony series, the “Serenade” works convey a more delicate and intimate atmosphere, expressing the urgency of interconnectedness and harmony among all beings through the frequent appearance of two or three circular forms within the paintings, just as suggested by its subtitle “Harmony.” The artist’s act of layering countless dots and lines with a palette knife to find rhythm and order on the canvas is similar to a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner letting go of attachment to the impermanent and transient things in the world while endlessly turning prayer beads, aspiring to reach a state of non-self in unity with the “emptiness yet fullness of the universe,” or to a classical music composer weaving together the sounds of various instruments to create a harmonious auditory composition. Based on her belief in the inter-reflectivity and interdependence of the universe as described in the Buddhist scripture “Indra’s Net,” the artist’s creative act and the resulting paintings become her message and prayer for harmony and peace sent to humanity and the universe.

SOONNAM KIM was born in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, and raised in Changwon, South Korea. She majored in Western painting at the College of Arts at Changwon National University. In 1995, she moved to the United States to pursue her MFA in Painting and Drawing at New Jersey City University. From 2004 to 2013, she served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Kean University in New Jersey, where she taught Introduction to Art, Color Theory, and 2D Design. After working as an artist and educator in the U.S. for over 20 years, Kim relocated to Wuppertal, Germany in 2014, where she began her “New Symphony” series, and has continued her creative practice in Seoul since returning to Korea in 2019. From October 2024 to June 2025, she participated as a resident artist in the 12th residency program at the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art Studio in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. She has participated in major exhibitions including Resonance: Five Asian Women Artists in New Jersey, Shades of Time: An Exhibition from the Archives of Korean-American Artists, 1989-2001 and held a solo exhibition at the Tongdo Museum of Tongdosa, one of Korea’s most significant Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. At her 2025 exhibition at Parrisco Fine Art Gallery, she was praised for “astonishingly reinterpreting Western visual perspectives through her own lens.”

This exhibition is part of the Art in the Workplace program, an initiative by the AHL Foundation in collaboration with Bank of Hope, designed to make contemporary Korean art accessible within everyday commercial spaces. It will remain on view through December 31, 2025, during Bank of Hope’s operating hours (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)의 아트 인더 워크 플레이스(Art in the Workplace) 프로그램의 일환으로 ‘김순남(SOONNAM KIM) 개인전’이 2025년 7월 1일(화)부터 뱅크오브호프(Bank of Hope) 맨해튼 지점(16 West 32nd Street, New York, NY 10001)에서 열린다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 작품들은 김순남의 ‘뉴 심포니(New Symphony)’ 시리즈에 속하는 소형 평면 회화로 구성된 “세레나데: 조화(Serenade: Harmony)” 연작이다. 팔레트 나이프를 사용해 점, 선, 색이라는 조형 요소에 집중하며 액션 페인팅의 방식으로 만들어진 뉴 심포니 시리즈는 마치 서양의 클래식 교향곡 음악과 같이 다양한 색채의 유화 물감으로 캔버스를 가득 채워 우주의 역동성과 조화를 시각적으로 형상화한다. 

뉴 심포니 시리즈 중 “세레나데” 연작은 더 섬세하고 친밀한 분위기를 자아내며, 부제인 ‘조화’처럼 작품에 자주 등장하는 두세 개의 원형을 통해 모든 존재의 상호 연결성과 조화의 절실함을 표현한다. 팔레트 나이프로 수없이 많은 점과 선들을 중첩하며 화면의 질서와 리듬을 찾아가는 작가의 행위는 마치 티베트 불교 수행자가 불 영속성의 무상한 것들에 대한 집착을 내려놓고, 우주의 ‘텅 빈 듯 충만한 기운’과 하나가 되는 무심의 상태에 도달하기를 염원하는 염주 수행이나 클래식 음악 작곡가가 다양한 악기 소리를 엮어 조화로운 청각적 구성을 만드는 작곡 과정과도 유사하다. 작가는 불교 경전 ‘인드라망’에 나오는 우주의 상호 반영성과 의존성에 대한 믿음을 바탕으로 한 창작 행위를 통해 인류와 우주에게 보내는 화합과 평화를 위한 메시지이자 기도로써 작품을 탄생시킨다.

김순남 작가는 경남 산청에서 태어나 창원에서 자랐으며, 국립창원대학교에서 서양화를 전공한 후 미국 New Jersey City University에서 회화와 드로잉 전공으로 MFA를 취득했다. 2004년부터 2013년까지 뉴저지 주립대 Kean University에서 겸임교수로 재직하며 미술 개론, 색채 이론, 그리고 2D 디자인을 가르쳤다. 20여 년간 미국에서 작가와 교육자로 활동한 후, 2014년 독일 부퍼탈에서 작업하며 “New Symphony” 시리즈를 시작했고, 2019년 귀국 후 서울을 기반으로 창작 활동을 이어가고 있다. 2024년 10월부터 2025년 6월까지는 경기도 광주에 위치한 영은미술관 창작스튜디오 12기 입주작가로 활동하였다. ‘공명: 뉴저지 아시아 여류화가 5인전’, ‘Shades of Time: An Exhibition from the Archives of Korean-American Artists, 1989-2001’ 등 주요 전시에 참여했으며, 통도사 성보박물관에서 개인전을 개최했다. 2025년 파리스코 파인아트 갤러리 전시에서는 “서구적 시각을 작가만의 해석으로 놀랍도록 재구성한다”는 평을 받았다.

본 전시는 누구나 일상의 상업 공간에서 한국 현대 미술 작품을 감상할 수 있도록 알재단과 뱅크오브호프 (Bank of Hope)가 협력해 기획되었다. 알재단이 매년 진행해 온 아트 인 워크 플레이스 (Art in the Workplace) 프로그램의 일환으로 운영된다. 전시는 2025년 7월 1일(화)부터 12월 31일(수)까지 뱅크오브호프 맨해튼 지점 운영 시간 내(9:00 AM – 5:00 PM) 관람 가능 하다.
