AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Korean and Korean American artists, has selected Jennifer Chaewon Byun as the recipient of the 2026 AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship. Since 2015, the Grace Charity Foundation has annually supported this fellowship, which provides a grant to enable in-depth research as part of the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA) project.

Jennifer Chaewon Byun is an artist, researcher, and curator based between New York and Seoul, pursuing an M.A. in the History of Art and Archaeology at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Her research centers on modern and contemporary East Asian and diasporic art, with a particular interest in practices mediated through the body, site, and collective experience.

Her current research focuses on communal artistic practices within Korea’s non-dominant art scene of the 1980s, interrogating how ephemeral, collective, and site-responsive practices produce their own archival forms through documentation, embodied memory, and the transmission of place-based knowledge. Attending to the ways artistic labor and embodied participation generate alternative modes of historical transmission, she examines how nature is activated as hyŏnjang (site of action), where artistic practice reconfigures inherited distinctions between culture and environment while resisting extractive and anthropocentric models of engagement.

Byun has worked across interdisciplinary contexts spanning the arts, design, and cultural production, with concert planning experience at SM Entertainment as well as Seoul Art Center, Crossing Art Gallery, and cultural institutions across Seoul and New York. She is the co-founder of MU (@mu_curates), a New York–based curatorial duo dedicated to the research and presentation of performance, time-based media, and other ephemeral artistic practices. She holds a B.F.A. in Contemporary Art with a minor in Industrial Design from Konkuk University, Seoul.

Launched in 2013, AKAA (Archive of Korean Artists in America) is one of AHL Foundation’s major initiatives to document and preserve materials related to Korean American artists. The archive serves as a platform for preserving Korean cultural heritage and fostering scholarly exchange among art historians and researchers. It is accessible to the public through its online platform, with the aim of expanding the visibility of Korean and Korean American artists and their contributions to American art history.

Beginning this fall, Byun will join the AKAA project team, conducting research and contributing to the development of the archive through the study and documentation of Korean and Korean American artistic practices. Through her fellowship research, she will further explore historical and communal artistic practices and their relationship to documentation, memory, and alternative forms of archival transmission.

The fellowship is made possible through the generous support of the Grace Charity Foundation, founded by Jin-soo Kim, CEO of Image Solutions, a global life sciences company, and his wife, Eun-sil Kim, a board member of AHL Foundation. The foundation supports educational and Christian missionary activities and, through its partnership with AHL Foundation, continues to promote the growth of the visual arts within the Korean American community.

2026 알-그레이스 채러티 재단 리서치 펠로우로 Jennifer Chaewon Byun 선정

비영리 한인 미술인 지원 단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)은 Jennifer Chaewon Byun (변채원) 씨를 2026년도 ‘알-그레이스 채러티 재단 리서치 펠로우십(AHL–Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellowship)’ 수상자로 선정했다. 2015년부터 알재단과 그레이스 채러티 재단(Grace Charity Foundation)은 매년 연구기금을 지원하며, 선정된 펠로우는 재미 한인 미술가 아카이브 (Archive of Korean Artists in America, AKAA) 프로젝트와 연계하여 한인 및 한인계 미술에 관한 심층 연구를 진행하게 된다.

변채원은 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 작가이자 연구자, 큐레이터로, 현재 뉴욕대학교 미술사·고고학 연구소(Institute of Fine Arts)에서 미술사 및 고고학 석사 과정을 밟고 있다. 동아시아 및 디아스포라의 근현대 미술을 중심으로 연구하며, 특히 신체, 장소, 집단적 경험을 매개로 이루어지는 예술 실천에 관심을 두고 있다.

현재는 1980년대 한국의 비주류 미술 현장에서 이루어진 공동체적 예술 실천을 연구하고 있다. 일시적이고 집단적이며 장소에 반응하는 예술 실천이 기록, 체화된 기억, 장소 기반 지식의 전승을 통해 어떻게 자신만의 아카이브적 형식을 만들어내는지를 탐구한다. 또한 예술적 노동과 신체적 참여가 대안적인 역사 전달 방식을 형성하는 과정에 주목하며, 자연이 현장(hyŏnjang), 즉 행위가 이루어지는 장소로 어떻게 활성화되는지를 살펴본다. 이를 통해 예술 실천이 문화와 환경 사이에 기존에 존재해온 구분을 어떻게 재구성하는 동시에, 자원 추출적이고 인간중심적인 참여 방식에 저항하는지를 연구하고 있다.

변채원은 예술, 디자인, 문화 생산을 아우르는 다양한 학제적 환경에서 활동해 왔으며, SM Entertainment에서의 콘서트 기획을 비롯해 서울예술의전당, Crossing Art Gallery 및 서울과 뉴욕의 여러 문화기관에서 경험을 쌓았다. 또한 뉴욕을 기반으로 퍼포먼스, 시간 기반 매체 및 기타 일시적 예술 실천을 연구하고 소개하는 큐레토리얼 듀오 MU(@mu_curates)의 공동 설립자이다. 서울 건국대학교에서 현대미술을 전공하고 산업디자인을 부전공하여 미술학사(B.F.A.)를 취득했다.

AKAA (Archive of Korean Artists in America)​는 2013년 시작된 알재단의 주요 사업 중 하나로, 재미 한인 미술가들에 관한 자료를 기록·보존하기 위해 운영되고 있다. AKAA는 한인 문화유산 보존과 미술사 연구자 간 학문적 교류를 위한 플랫폼으로 기능하며, 온라인 아카이브를 통해 대중들에게 공개되어 있다.

변채원은 올가을부터 AKAA 프로젝트팀에 합류하여 한인 및 한인계 미술 실천에 대한 연구와 아카이브 구축에 참여할 예정이다. 특히 공동체적 예술 실천과 기록, 기억, 장소 기반 지식의 전승 방식에 주목하여 관련 연구를 진행하고, 이를 AKAA의 자료 수집 및 연구 활동과 연계해 나갈 예정이다.

본 리서치 펠로우십은 이미지 솔루션(Image Solutions)의 CEO 김진수 씨와 알재단 이사인 부인 김은실 씨가 교육 및 기독교 선교 활동을 지원하기 위해 설립한 그레이스 채러티 재단의 후원으로 가능해졌다. 알재단과 그레이스 채러티 재단은 한인 커뮤니티와 미주 한인 미술계 발전을 위해 지속적으로 협력해오고 있다.
