AHL Foundation Presents: On the Verge — A Nokmee New York Members’ Group Exhibition

The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Korean artists and arts communities, presents On the Verge, a Nokmee New York Members’ Group Exhibition. The exhibition is on view at AHL Foundation Gallery, located at 2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1 in New York City.

Founded in New York in 1998 by alumnae of the College of Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University, Nokmee New York is an arts organization established to support artists who have relocated to the United States in sustaining their creative practices and maintaining artistic exchange. Since its founding, the group has remained active through exhibitions, support for artistic production, and a range of volunteer-based initiatives.

This exhibition features works by eight Nokmee New York member artists: Donna Hong, Eugene Lee, Yunjeong Lee, Min Kim, Misoo Kim, Nawon Kim, Stephanie Kim, and Soo Yun.

Sook Nyu Lee Kim, President of the AHL Foundation, stated “We are pleased to have the opportunity to introduce a variety of art communities that are actively engaged in self-initiated practices. Moving forward, the AHL Foundation will continue to work closely with community-based art groups, serving as a bridge between artists and the public.”

About Artist

Donna Hong is an artist who reinterprets the symbolism and spiritual foundations of traditional Korean folk painting (Minhwa) through a contemporary lens. Rooted in beliefs of good fortune and protection, her work reflects universal human wishes for happiness, longevity, and blessing. Through repetitive, layered brushstrokes, Hong emphasizes painting as a meditative act, proposing the enduring protective and healing power of images in modern life. She holds a BFA in Applied Art from Ewha Womans University in Seoul and an MS in Interior Design from Pratt Institute in New York. She also completed interior design programs at DIS in Copenhagen and New York University. With over two decades of professional experience, she worked as a Design Director at H Design Group in New York and later served as an instructor in interior architecture and design at several Korean universities. Her career includes roles as Director of Design at A&D Media and A&D Studio, as well as a design consultant for SkinCure Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Celltrion. She has served as a judge for major design competitions and received the Professor of the Year Award from Kukje University. She continues to actively engage in art and design practice.

 

Eugene Lee is an interdisciplinary artist from Seoul, South Korea, currently based in New York. She received her BFA in Ceramics from Ewha Womans University in 2020 and is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography at Parsons School of Design. Moving fluidly between photography, objects, and installation, Lee explores how images can hold memory, texture, and trace. Her practice transforms photographs into sculptural forms through layering, engraving, and materials that invite touch and light, shifting the photograph away from its traditional flat surface to create spaces where viewers encounter images through sensation, proximity, and memory. Her work has been exhibited at Gallery Meme’s Mongeul in Seoul, F-STOP Magazine’s Minimal issue, the Youth exhibition at Gallery 881 in Vancouver, Photoville in New York, One Art Space in New York, the Pingyao International Photography Festival, and LoosenArt’s Resonance of Self in Rome.

 

Yunjeong Lee is a multidisciplinary artist exploring the role of art as a catalyst for empathy, solidarity, and community engagement within immigrant communities. She holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Western Painting from Ewha Womans University and earned a second Master of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York through a merit scholarship. Lee has presented solo exhibitions in South Korea and the United States and participated in numerous group exhibitions at leading galleries and museums. Her work has been recognized with awards from the Jungang Art Competition and the Korea Art Grand Competition. Currently, she serves as Art Director of MK SPACE, an alternative exhibition space within the MinKwon Center in New Jersey, curating exhibitions that support immigrant homeless communities and artists with disabilities. She also organizes and leads the “Art DongHaeng” program at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, providing guided tours that foster shared experiences and community connection through art. Lee’s projects extend art beyond aesthetic appreciation, positioning it as a medium for social connection, support, and communal reflection.

 

Min Kim holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Ewha Womans University and a Master of Science (MS) from Pratt Institute. She previously served as an Adjunct Professor at Hanyang Women’s University.  With formal training in Korean traditional painting (Minhwa), she creates works that connect classical techniques of traditional Minhwa with contemporary themes. She currently serves as the Vice President and the Director of the Minhwa Division at the Korean New York Artist Association. Furthermore, she has led workshops and artist talks at the New York Public Library, the Newark Museum, and the New York Korean Festival, where she has introduced and taught Korean minhwa to a wide audience, and she is currently teaching minhwa at the Kate Oh Gallery.

 

Misoo Kim is an artist currently based in New York. Her artistic journey began in her early years, exploring various mediums including watercolor, oil, and traditional Korean painting. She graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University in 1990, majoring in Sculpture. Since resuming her full-time artistic practice in 2016, Kim further honed her skills at The Art Students League of New York for three years. Her current work uniquely integrates ceramics with painting; she depicts mountains, seas, and figures through a harmonious combination of ceramic relief and oil painting.  Kim is an active member of the Nok-Mi Association, Chang-Mi Association, and the Korean American Contemporary Arts, Ltd. (KACAL). She also teaches painting to adults at the Great Neck Nanum Culture Center.

 

Nawon Kim is a sculptural artist based between New York and Seoul. She received her BFA and MFA in Ceramic Arts from Ewha Womans University in South Korea and is currently an MFA candidate in Sculpture at Pratt Institute. Working across ceramics, textiles, performance, installation, and participatory practices, she continues to expand her material language in relation to the body and lived experience. Her work explores how memory settles into the body and becomes visible over time. Through the use of clay, fabric, and spatial installation, she visualizes embodied experiences shaped by the social gaze and the gendered expectations she encounters as a woman. Through her practice, she seeks to create spaces where the memories we carry in our bodies can be held, shared, and gently transformed.

 

Stephanie Kim’s work is rooted in the traditions of Korean ink painting, exploring memory, nature, and identity through restrained, meditative processes using ink, hanji, and mineral pigments. She approaches nature as a space of internal resonance rather than literal depiction, creating quiet moments of reflection and emotional connection. She is a graduate of Sunhwa Arts Middle and High School, and holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Oriental Painting from Ewha Womans University. She also studied Digital Design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Her early achievements include recognition in the 1996 National Art Competition of Korea and the 1996 MBC Art Exhibition. She later contributed to public art projects, including a mural at Farmingville Elementary Library in Connecticut (2009), and served as an art teacher at Beacon Church for Korean children (2010) and at Shindap Elementary School in Seoul (2014–2017).

 

Soo Yun is a contemporary artist who earned her B.F.A. in Painting & Print-making from Ewha Womans University in 2010, before moving to New York to complete her M.F.A. at the Pratt Institute in 2016, where she broadened her practical experience through internships with ceramic studios, galleries, and Gerald Siciliano’s sculptor studio, culminating in her solo M.F.A. exhibition, MAW, and participation in subsequent group shows and residencies. After relocating her studio to New Jersey, she significantly relaunched her career in 2022, earning recognition such as the “County of Bergen ARF Arts Grant Award” and the “Young Korean Artist Award” (Bronze), and has since expanded her exhibiting stage internationally, showcasing her work at art fairs and exhibitions in New York, New Jersey, Austin, Miami, and Seoul, and recently holding the successful fifth solo exhibition, Origin of Camouflage.

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단(AHL Foundation, 대표 이숙녀)이 뉴욕 녹미회 (Nokmee New York) 회원전 On the Verge를 알재단 갤러리(2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10001)에서 열고 있다.

뉴욕 녹미회는 1998년 이화여자대학교 조형예술대학 동문들이 뉴욕에서 설립한 예술 단체로, 미국으로 이주한 동문 작가들이 창작 활동을 지속하고 예술적 교류를 이어갈 수 있도록 지원하기 위해 출범했다. 설립 이후 전시 개최, 창작 지원, 다양한 자원봉사 활동을 통해 꾸준히 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있다.

이번 전시에는 녹미회 회원 홍혜련(Donna Hong), 이유진(Eugene Lee), 이윤정(Yunjeong Lee), 김민(Min Kim), 김미수(Misoo Kim), 김나원(Nawon Kim), 황지영(Stephanie Kim), 윤수(Soo Yun) 총 8명의 작가가 참여한다.

알재단 이숙녀 회장은 “자생적으로 활동하는 다양한 미술 커뮤니티를 소개할 수 있어 기쁘다. 앞으로도 알재단은 커뮤니티에서 활동하는 여러 모임들과 긴밀히 소통하여, 대중과 미술인의 연결 고리를 만드는 역할을 하도록 하겠다.” 라며 전시 개최 소감을 밝혔다.

참여 작가 프로필

홍혜련은 한국 전통 민화(Minhwa)의 상징성과 정신적 기반을 현대적 시각으로 재해석하는 작가이다. 길상과 수호의 의미를 지닌 민화의 전통을 바탕으로, 행복과 장수, 축복에 대한 보편적인 인간의 염원을 작품에 담아낸다. 반복적으로 쌓인 붓질을 통해 회화를 명상적 행위로 확장하며, 이미지가 지닌 보호와 치유의 힘이 시대 불문하고 유효하다는 것을 강조한다. 이화여자대학교에서 응용미술 학사를, 프랫 인스티튜트에서 실내디자인 석사를 취득했으며, 코펜하겐 DIS와 뉴욕대학교에서도 실내디자인 과정을 수료했다. 또한 20년 이상 뉴욕에서 디자인 디렉터로 활동했으며, 한국 여러 대학에서 인테리어 디자인 및 건축 디자인을 가르쳤다. 주요 디자인 기업과 미디어 스튜디오에서 디렉터로 활동했으며, 디자인 경연 심사위원 및 대학 ‘올해의 교수상’을 수상한 바 있다. 현재도 예술과 디자인 전반에서 활발히 활동 중이다.

이유진은 서울에서 태어나 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 복합매체 아티스트이다. 그는 2020년 이화여자대학교에서 도예 전공으로 미술학 학사(BFA)를 취득했으며, 현재 파슨스 스쿨 오브 디자인에서 사진 MFA 과정을 밟고 있다. 도예 전공을 기반으로 그의 작업은 사진, 오브젝트, 설치 사이를 유연하게 넘나들며, 이미지가 기억, 질감, 흔적을 어떻게 품을 수 있는지 탐구한다. 그의 작업은 사진을 레이어링, 에칭, 촉각과 빛을 유도하는 다양한 재료를 통해 조각적 형태로 전환시키며, 사진을 기존의 평면적 표면에서 벗어나 관람자가 감각, 거리감, 기억을 통해 이미지를 경험할 수 있는 공간을 만들어낸다. 그의 작품은 서울의 갤러리밈 ‘몽글거리기’, F-STOP 매거진 Minimal issue, 밴쿠버의 Gallery 881 Youth 전시, 뉴욕의 Photoville 페스티벌, One Art Space, Pingyao 국제사진제, 로마의 LoosenArt Resonance of Self 전 등지에서 전시되었다.

이윤정은 다학제적 접근을 통해 예술이 이민자 공동체 내에서 공감, 연대, 그리고 공동체적 참여를 촉진하는 역할을 탐구하는 미술가이다. 그녀는 이화여자대학교에서 서양화과 학사 및 석사 학위를 취득하였으며, 장학금을 받아 뉴욕 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아츠에서 두 번째 석사 학위를 취득하였다. 이윤정은 한국과 미국에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 다양한 갤러리와 미술관에서 열린 단체전에 활발히 참여해왔다. 그녀의 작품은 중앙미술대전과 대한민국미술대전에서 수상하였다. 현재 그녀는 뉴저지 민권센터 산하 대안 전시공간 MK SPACE의 아트 디렉터로 활동하며, 이민자 홈리스 커뮤니티와 장애 예술가들을 지원하는 전시를 기획하고 있다. 또한, 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)에서 진행되는 ‘아트동행(Art DongHaeng)’ 프로그램을 운영하며, 관람객과의 공동체적 경험과 소통을 이끌어낸다. 이윤정의 작업은 단순한 감상의 대상을 넘어, 예술을 사회적 연결과 공동체적 지지, 그리고 성찰을 가능하게 하는 매개체로 확장한다.

김민은 이화여자대학교에서 미술학사(BFA)를, 프랫 인스티튜트에서 이학석사(MS)를 취득했으며 한양여자대학교에서 겸임교수를 역임했다. 전통 민화의 고전적인 기법과 현대적인 주제를 연결하는 작품을 창작하고 있다. 현재 뉴욕한인예술가 협회(Korean New York Artist Association)에서 부회장 및 민화 분과 위원장을 맡고 있으며 New York Public Library, Newark Museum, New York Korean Festival 등에서 민화 워크숍 및 artist talk을 진행하여 한국 민화를 알리고 있으며, 현재 KateOh 갤러리에서 민화를 가르치고 있다.

김미수는 서울에서 태어나 이화여자대학교 미술대학 조소과를 졸업(1990)했다. 어린 시절부터 수채화, 유화, 동양화 등 다양한 매체를 탐구해온 그는 현재 미국 뉴욕을 기반으로 활발한 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다. 2016년 본격적인 작업 재개와 함께 뉴욕 아트 스튜던츠 리그(The Art Students League of New York)에서 3년간 수학하며 회화적 깊이를 더했다. 작가는 조소 전공의 이력을 살려 도자 부조(Ceramic Relief)와 유화를 접목한 독창적인 조형 언어를 구축하고 있으며, 산과 바다, 그리고 인물을 통해 서정적인 풍경을 빚어낸다. 현재 녹미회, 창미회, 한미현대예술협회(KACAL) 회원으로 활동 중이며, 그레잇넥 나눔 문화센터에서 미술을 지도하며 대중과 소통하고 있다.

김나원은 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 조형 예술가이다. 이화여자대학교에서 도예를 전공하여 학사 및 석사 학위를 받았으며, 현재 프랫 인스티튜트에서 조각 전공 MFA 과정에 재학 중이다. 그는 도자, 섬유, 퍼포먼스, 설치, 관객 참여형 예술을 넘나들며 신체와 삶의 경험을 중심으로 한 물질 언어를 확장해 나가고 있다. 그의 작업은 기억이 신체에 스며들어 시간의 흐름 속에서 어떻게 가시화되는지를 탐구한다. 점토, 직물, 공간 설치를 활용하여 사회적 시선과 여성으로서 마주하는 기대에 의해 형성된 체화된 경험들을 시각화한다. 그의 작업은 우리가 몸에 지니고 있는 기억들이 머무르고, 공유되며, 부드럽게 변형될 수 있는 공간을 만들어내고자 한다.

황지영은 한국화의 전통을 바탕으로 기억, 자연, 정체성을 사유하는 작업을 이어가는 작가이다. 먹, 한지, 석채와 분채를 사용한 절제되고 명상적인 제작 과정을 통해 자연을 내면의 울림이 투영되는 공간으로 다룬다. 선화예중·고를 졸업하고 이화여자대학교에서 동양화 학·석사를 취득했으며, 피츠버그 예술대학에서 디지털 디자인을 공부했다. 1996년 대한민국 미술대전과 MBC 미술대전에서 수상했으며, 코네티컷 공공 벽화 프로젝트와 한국 및 미국에서 교육 활동을 이어왔다. 

윤수는 1986년 서울에서 태어나 2010년 이화여자대학교에서 회화 및 판화 전공으로 미술학사(B.F.A.) 학위를 취득했다. 이후 뉴욕으로 건너가 2016년 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute)에서 미술학 석사(M.F.A.) 과정을 마쳤는데, 이 기간 동안 도예 스튜디오, 갤러리, 조각가 제럴드 시실리아노(Gerald Siciliano)의 스튜디오 등에서의 인턴십을 통해 실무 경험을 넓혔다. 이는 그녀의 석사 졸업 개인전 MAW와 이후의 그룹전 및 레지던시 참여로 이어졌습니다. 뉴저지로 스튜디오를 이전한 후, 그녀는 2022년에 활동을 재개하며 “버겐카운티 ARF 아트 그랜트 어워드”와 “젊은 한국 작가상” (동상) 등을 수상하며 주목받았고, 뉴욕과 뉴저지를 넘어 오스틴, 마이애미, 서울 등에서 아트 페어와 전시를 통해 국제적으로 활동 무대를 확장하고 있다. 최근에는 성공적인 다섯번째 개인전Origin of Camouflage를 개최하기도 했다.
