2024 AHL Foundation – Myongji University Graduate School Symposium ‘Issues of Korean Contemporary Art in Korea and Abroad’ to be Held

On Saturday, January 27th, at 2 PM at the AHL Foundation Gallery

The AHL Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Korean artists, will hold a symposium on ‘Issues of Korean Contemporary Art in Korea and Abroad’ in collaboration with the Myongji University Department of Art History on Saturday, January 27th, 2024 at AHL Foundation’s gallery (2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., #C1, New York, NY 10030). 

This symposium will commence with an opening keynote lecture by Professor Jieun Rhee from the Professor of Art History, Myongji University Director, Institute of Cultural Heritages on ‘The Showcase: Presenting Korean Contemporary Art in the West.’ Following this, presentations will be given by Yunyoung Kim (Curator, Arario Art Museum /Ph.D Candidate in Art History, Myongji University) on ‘Becoming Contemporary: Youn Myeung-ro’s early works in the 1960s and 70s.’ , Choi Young-sik Youngsik Choi (M.A. in Art History, Graduate School of Culture and Arts, Myongji University) on ‘Synchronicity of Asynchronicity :Kim Kulim’s Work and the Modernization of Korea in the 1970s.’ and Jihyun Kim (M.A. in Art History, Graduate School of Humanities, Myongji University) on ‘Human and Non-human Beings in the Anthropocene: Case Studies in Korean Contemporary Art.’

After examining several important overseas exhibitions that have highlighted the status of Korean contemporary art since the 1950s, the presentations will delve into the direction of Korean contemporary art from the perspective of global art history. This will include discussions on Kim Kulim, a significant figure in the experimental art of the 1970s, his activities in New York in the 1980s, the allegorical representation of the current state of Anthropocene in the artworks of Miru Kim, Hyewon Keum, Leepark Kim, and an introduction to the contemporary aspects evident in the 1960s and 1970s works of Yoon Myeung-ro, a prominent figure leading the Korean Informel art movement.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Rhee Jieun is a professor in the Art History department at Myongji University. She is a former president of the Korean Society of Art Theories and the chief editor of Art Theory and Practice. She served as a member of the steering committee for the MMCA’s Korea Artist Prize, a visiting scholar in the History, Theory, and Criticism (HTC) division at MIT, and a faculty fellow at the Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley College. Currently, she holds the position of dean of the Graduate School of Culture and Arts and serves as the director of the Institute of Cultural Heritages at Myongji University. Dr. Rhee is also the president of the Association of Western Art History. Her major research areas include globalization and contemporary art, Korean modern and contemporary art, and art in the Anthropocene. She is the author of the book “Museum of the Senses: Five Senses and Contemporary Art,” while her major academic papers include “Performing the Other: Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece” (2005), which appeared in Hilary Robinson’s “Feminism Art Theory: An Anthology 1968-2014” (2015).

Youngsik Choi obtained her master’s degree in Art History from the Graduate School of Culture and Art at Myongji University with a thesis titled “ The Meaning of Time and Space in Kim kulim’s Work: Focusing on Works by Period“. Currently, he is conducting research on the experimental art of the 1970s in Korea.

Jihyun Kim obtained her master’s degree in Art History from the Graduate School of Humanities at Myongji University with a thesis titled “Living with the Postnatural Beings: Case Studies in Korean Contemporary Art.” Currently serving as the general affairs assistant administrator at the Association of Western Art History, she continues her research in the art of the Anthropocene.
Jihyun Kim, M.A. in Art History, Graduate School of Humanities, Myongji University
Yunyoung KIM is a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History at Myongji University, where she completed her MA. She has worked as an intern at the Park Sookeun Museum, Leeum Museum of Art, and as a researcher in the Exhibition Department of the National Museum of Korea, and is currently a curator at Arario Museum. In 2018, she participated as a researcher in the YOUN Myeung-ro research team of the Korean Artist Digital Archive Project, and is currently exploring contemporary art. Her publications include “A Study of Damien Hirst’s Medicine Series: 1988-2005″(2014) and “Arario Collection and Young Artists”(2022).

2024 알재단-명지대학교 대학원 심포지엄

‘국내와 해외에서의 한국현대미술’ 개최 

1월 27일(토) 오후 2시-5시 알재단 갤러리에서

비영리 한인 미술인 지원단체 알재단 (AHL Foundation 대표 이숙녀)이 2024년 1월 27일(토), 오후 2시에 명지대학교 미술사학과와 함께 ‘국내와 해외에서의 한국 현대 미술’을 주제로 심포지엄을 개최한다. 

이번 심포지엄은 이지은 명지대학교 미술사학과 교수의 ‘쇼케이스: 서구에 선보인 한국의 동시대 미술’을 주제로 한 기조발제를 시작으로 김윤영(아라리오 뮤지엄 큐레이터/명지대 박사과정)씨의 ‘윤명로의 1960-1970년대 작업 형성기 작품 연구’, 최영식(명지대 미술사학과 석사과정)씨의 ‘김구림의 1970년대 작업과 한국의 근대화 과정’ 및 김지현(명지대 석사 과정, 서양미술사학회 총무간사)씨의 ‘인류세의 인간과 비인간:한국 동시대 미술의 사례연구’ 발표로 진행될 예정이다.

50년대 이후 한국현대미술의 위상을 알린 몇몇 중요 해외전시들을 살펴보는 기조 발제 이후, 본 발표에서는 글로벌 미술사의 측면에서 한국현대미술의 방향성, 1970년대 실험예술의 중요한 인물인 김구림의 예술세계와 80년대 그의 뉴욕 활동, 인류세(Anthropocene)의 현 상황을 작품에 은유적으로 드러낸 작가 김미루(Miru Kim), 금혜원(Hyewon Keum), 김이박(Leepark Kim)의 작품 세계 조명, 한국 앵포르멜(informel) 미술운동을 주도한 인물 가운데 한 명으로 손꼽히는 윤명로(1936~ )의 60년대와 70년대 작품에서 나타나는 동시대적 면모를 소개 할 예정이다.

(별첨 2) ‘국내와 해외에서의 한국현대미술’ 심포지엄 발표 연사 프로필

이지은은 명지대학교 미술사학과 교수로 한국미술이론학회 회장, 학술 저널 『미술이론과 현장』의 편집위원장을 맡았으며, 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상 운영위원, 한국연구재단 문화융복합 전문위원, 매사추세츠 공과대학교 역사이론비평분과(HTC) 방문 학자, 웰즐리 칼리지 뉴하우스 인문학 센터 교수 펠로우 등을 역임했다. 현재 명지대 문화예술대학원장, 문화유산연구소장, 서양미술사학회 회장을 맡고 있다. 주요 연구 분야는 전 지구화 시대의 현대미술, 한국의 동시대 미술, 인류세 미술 등이며 저서로 『감각의 미술관』(2012), 주요 논문으로 『페미니즘 예술 이론 1968-2014』(Feminism Art Theory 1968-2014, 2015)에 실린 「퍼포먼스와 타자의 역할: 오노 요코의 〈컷 피스〉」(Performing the Other: Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece, 2005) 등이 있다.

최영식은 명지대학교 문화예술대학원 미술사학과에서 “김구림 작업에 있어서 시간과 공간의 의미 : 시대별 작품을 중심으로”라는 논문으로 석사학위를 취득했다.  현재 1970년 한국의 실험미술에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.
명지대학교 문화예술대학원 미술사학과 최영식
김지현은 명지대학교 일반대학원 미술사학과에서 “변형된 자연과 함께하기: 동시대 한국 미술에서의 사례 연구”라는 논문으로 석사 학위를 취득했다. 현재는 서양미술사학회의 총무 간사를 맡고 있으며, 인류세의 미술에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.
명지대학교 일반대학원 미술사학과 김지현
김윤영은 명지대학교 미술사학과에서 서양현대미술로 석사를 마치고 박사과정 중에 있으며, 박수근미술관, 리움미술관 인턴, 국립중앙박물관 전시과 연구원을 거쳐 현재 아라리오뮤지엄 큐레이터로 재직하고 있다. 2018년 원로작가 디지털 아카이빙 사업의 윤명로 연구팀 연구원으로 참여하였으며, 한국과 서양의 동시대미술을 연구하고 있다. 논문으로 「데미안 허스트의 약 시리즈 연구: 1988-2005년 작품을 중심으로」(2014)와 「아라리오컬렉션과 젊은 예술가들」(2022)이 있다.
