Culinary Patterns: Kira Nam Greene presents vibrant and complex paintings that incorporate patterns, icons, painterly smears with realistic depiction of lush still lives. Greene combines colorful rigidity of patterns from various traditions, both East and West, with the sensuality of food, to weave luscious compositions that reference the plurality and dichotomy of being an Asian immigrant woman in America. With references to Dutch still life and collage like dissonance, Greene’s decadent imagery combines divergent styles to build up complex spatial tension that is continually heightened and disrupted. Born in Seoul, Korea, Kira Nam Greene received her BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She held her first solo exhibition in New York in 2010 through A.I.R. Gallery’s Fellowship Program. Her work has been exhibited at the Noyes Museum of Art, NJ; the Sheldon Museum of Art, NE; The Bronx Museum of Art, NY; the Nathan Cummings Foundation, NY; Beard & Weil Galleries, Wheaton College, MA; Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, NY; and SOMArts Cultural Center, CA among other venues. Greene lives and works in New York.
