Ran Hwang is an installation artist using mixed media. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts and received her MFA at Chung-Ang University in Korea. . She has been a recipient of numerous awards and grants: 2004 Year Visual Arts Competition of the AHL Foundation.  During her study period in New York, she was working in the fashion industry and exposed to aesthetic potential of clothing accessories such as buttons, pins, and thread.  She has created seductive images representing natural scenery or famous cultural monuments. For example, she is famous for large icons such as a Buddha or a traditional vase, using materials from the garment manufacturing. But the process of assembling and pasting all those tiny materials on canvas or panel resembles a practice in Zen Buddhism. Like a meditating monk, she focuses on every single element through painstaking gestures of hammering and sewing.

She is currently having a solo exhibition at Leila Heller Gallery in Chelsea (568 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10011) called The Snowfall of Spiders. Her exhibitions have been held at numerous galleries and museums around the world.

The visit to her studio is led by Dr. Kyunghee Pyun, professor at Fashion Institute of Technology.
