Nancy Hwang has been selected to receive the prestigious $20,000 AHL-Jason J. Kim Grant for her upcoming project “Somewhere in America” where Hwang will solicit individuals to submit a description of a journey to somewhere in America. The artist and the invited individual will then take the journey together to discover each other, themselves, and the destination, while exploring biases, insights and local state of affairs. Through the shared primary experience of a journey worth sharing, the artist plans to form an accumulative portrait of America and present it in collaboration with curator Catharina Manchanda.

Jaye Rhee will be award the $5,000 AHL-Andrew & Barbara Choi Grant for her project “The Perfect Moment” which is currently on view at the Picker Art Gallery, Colgate University and will travel to University Galleries, Texas State University in San Marcos in February of 2016. The two channel video along with eight photographs explore the visceral nature of the human body and its movements along with the ever elusive re-representation of a narrative – a re-telling and re-enactment of the perfect moment by two dancers, old and young.

The main goals of the AHL Foundation project grants are to support the artist’s creative process and to cultivate innovative and challenging works through financial assistance during key moments in the development of an art project. Two most important criteria for the grants are artistic merit and its impact on contemporary art.

The AHL–Jason J. Kim Grant is the largest grant of its kind in the U.S. and is intended for mid-career artists who have already demonstrated an exceptional capacity in the visual arts and aims to assist these artists in realizing specific projects at critical moments of financial need. AHL–Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Grant aims to nurture and assist talented visual artists of all career stages in realizing forthcoming projects while building their capacity to sustain their productive long-term careers.

The next grant application deadlines will be May 2016 for Andrew & Barbara Choi Family Grant and May 2017 for Jason J. Kim Grant. For additional information about our grants and other programs, please visit www.ahlfoundation.org or contact us at info@ahlfoundation.org.
